| Will my cooler fit properly on a 6600GT AGP?
I purchased a Thermaltake Extreme Giant III with dual heatpipes and ram sinks some time ago. I planned to put it on a 9800 pro, however I've decided to get an Albatron 6600GT instead. So I'd simply like to know whether there will be conflicts or not. If so, I'd rather just get a 9800 pro and flash it to an xt. I look forward to your replies. Thanks. |

Let me put it this way:
If you get the 9800PRO and flash it to 9800XT, the 6600GT will own it anytime @stock speeds. So there is no need to use the Giant 3 on the 6600GT because it's already a blazing fast card. I say get the 6600GT because you have nothing to lose

Well, the plan was to flash the 9800 pro to an XT then overclock it further, as far as possible without getting artifacts. I'm not sure how that would compare to a 6600GT AGP at stock speeds... I would assume a bit better but that's pushing it awfully hard...
All right, I'm going to buy the 6600GT but the cooler was $30 so I really want to put it to use regardless. I also want to overclock the card regardless of how well it performs. Hence, I'd really still like to know if my cooler will properly fit on this card. If not, I suppose I'll have to try to sell the cooler, although I'd rather not go through the hassle. Any experiences? If anybody knows, I'd appreciate an answer. Thanks. |

You would really need to max out a 9800XT to match up with 6600GT stock speeds, if that's even possible. You can usually get 1k in 3dmark 03 by OCing your card to the max. I think that the 9800XT can get 6k at stock speeds (I dunno ATI's drivers today) so that means you could get 7k max if you push it really hard, while the 6600GT scores 8k stock |

No, based on the majority of benchmarks I've seen, the 9800XT should get closer to 7000 at stock and the 9800 Pro (256-bit R360) closer to 6500 in 3dMark03. For instance, http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/cont...rticle/1755.3/ Around 8000 marks sounds right for the 6600GT. It would be interesting to see some benchmarks between an OCed 9800XT and a stock 6600GT AGP. I think it would be close but the OCed 9800XT should usually win. I'd have to see a few benchmarks to believe otherwise. And of course it also depends on how overclockable the card is... Additionally, I wouldn't rely solely on 3Dmark03. Not suggesting you would, by the way. Anyway, I've seen quite a few benchmarks. I really don't want to split hairs over this though. At this point, I'd like the main focus to be on my original question.
I'm most likely getting the 6600GT, so I don't need to be convinced. I understand it's a better card than the 9800XT or frankly anything else in its class. That's why I'm getting it. And let's not forget it can be overclocked... hopefully to hell and back. If my blasted cooler will fit it... |

I watercooled my 9800xt and it still didnt have much room left for overclocking in it. Flashing an nonXT card and hoping to go far beyond xt speeds using an aircooled cooling solution is a wish that wont come true.
Forget the 9800pro or xt, forget the cooler and stick with the 6600gt. If the cooler doesnt fit the 6600gt, in which it MOST LIKELY wont (different companies, different board designs)... forget about it. Sell the cooler on ebay.
Bottom line, dont let the cooler decide which card to get. |

Okay, I thought about it some more and decided I'm going to get the 6600GT AGP in a few days! Another thing I can do about the Extreme Giant pain in the... is just wait until the overpriced x800xt or whatever drops a couple hundred bucks and put my cooler on that. It might take a couple years but that's about when I plan to upgrade anyway. At any rate, thanks for your input pinipig and nwo. I'm glad I didn't buy the 9800 pro... |
