Thread: Graphic card upgrade?

December 25th, 2004, 10:00 PM #41are you refering to the X800 series or just the x800 flat out? becuase my bro has an X800pro with 2gb kingston hyperX, amd 64-fx53 and he runs it at damn good frame rates considering hes playing with everything all the way up at 1600x1280 (ultra quality, vsync, AA only to 4x bcuz doom3 doesnt have a 6x AA mode (sadly). and he gets more then decent fps. he gets the occasionall slowdown for a few seconds and thats only if multiple enemies pop out if its just like one it has no problem at all(to bad he didnt spend the extra 100 and get the XT). but anyways im assuming your reffering to the X800 itself.

Yep, that's right; the 9700Pro and vanilla 9800 are on the same page and the vanilla 9700 isn't that far behind.

he was probably referring to the x800pro. Headband was right, you really can't get those kind of results with a x800pro on an ordinary rig. Your bro has a very high end rig, the CPU being second best, and with 2 gigs of RAM, those results are very possible with that kind of rig, but not on let's say an atlon XP 2600+ 1 gig of RAM and x800pro

If you can buy one for 100-125 then get it. I am an ATI man myself.

yea i currently have 2.4G o/c'd to 3G but apperently this cpu had 533fsb and now its at 668fsb...so its not at full 800fsb for my ram. I have 768mb of pc3200 ram. Does fsb affect video card performance?

Not directly no. But the FSB will affect CPU performace which will affect overall performace.

Sir Bob
Before you even consider upgrading your card, check some basic facts out about your computer. Firstly, what is your PSU? You dont' want to be running a 6600 GT on anything lower than 350W. Do you have PCI Express slots? If you're using AGP slots then the 6600 GT isn't compatible. Lastly, I would recommend going for the 9800 Pro if you're considering Radeon. I have a 250W Dell PSU which runs fine with the card. If you're running a 250W PSU that's generic brand or brand name, or if you have a 250W quality PSU (or even hihger), go to www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply and determine your present energy usage. I do not want to over-elaborate on the power supply, but if perchance your system does not contain a sufficient PSU, then you may very well be looking at a system meltdown.

I must admit I have the card you have right now and it is an excellent card with a solid performance. You should wait at least until second quarter of next year to let the prices drop on the hardware.

Sir Bob
You will not need a utility to wipe your drivers. Simply go to "my computer", "add/remove programs", then locate the nvidia drivers after the list is populated. Uninstall those drivers such as you would any other program.

yea but i there are files that wont be erased even with the removing program in the control panel. I have lots of drivers with overclocking stuff and tweaks
