6600 w/ 256 MB RAM vs. 6600GT w/ 128MB RAM
Hi All,
I'm pretty ignorant in this area, so thanks for your help and patience. To make a long story short, I have a choice of getting a 6600 with 256MB of RAM or a 6600GT with 128MB of RAM. I'm mostly interested in watching streaming video / TV (Media Center PC), and my mobo has PCI-E, which these would be (btw: both are eVGA cards).
Which card would you recommend? Any further info on the merits of RAM vs. other characteristics of cards is also appreciated.
Thanks,
Per

could you provide any links? Regardless, more ram is always better ... especially if you intend to game.

Personally the 128MB GT card would be faster(and if you wanted to game later on 128MB version would play games just fine) and the 256MB doesn't sound like it would be useful in your case.
Do you have links to the two cards you are looking at? Just to compare features/companys you are looking at.* ¨ )

Thanks Mcintosh...take a look here: http://www.evga.com/products/prod_list.asp?switch=8
I just saw 6600 or 6600GT, which maybe says the other way is better (i.e. more RAM not necessarily better)?

damn, you guys are fast..awesome :-). so - pricing would also confirm that the GT - (because of it's faster memory architecture?) is the way to go.
Yeah?

Well your not going to need that much memory for gameplay as it would be much slower to have a 256MB card anyhow and the gt card is a lot faster. I would recommend the 6600 GT still.
I use windows media center 2005 myself with a radeon 9600, it runs everything smoothly even games.
The 6600GT is my choice of cards if i were you tho, it is a supperior card.* ¨ )

*NOTE* When you are buying a video card more RAM is not better. Go with the faster model with less RAM.

Ooops, I thought the 256mb card was a GT ... chaintech has a 6600 gt card with 256mb (Dual gpus I think). Get the 6600gt w/ 128mb ram over the budget 256mb card... I'm getting two of the 6600 gts soon for my asus a8n (or maybe one 6800gt if the prices drop anytime soon) .

Not sure either ... but it already has a few reviews under its belt. Also the card is from gigabyte, not chaintech.

They will probably release the dual core in the first or second quarter of next year.

The 3D1 should be released in Q1'05, paired with a nForce SLI motherboard in a limited edition bundle.

the extra RAM is currently not fully utilized in any game, so the 128MB 6600GT would whoop the 256MB 6600 in every single aspect. I think nuff has been said
