I thought more vram would have faster and smoother performance. I thought its just like sys RAM, the more you have, the better. |

| As with any type of memory, there is a threshold when more primary storage no longer leads to easily detectable performance gains. Case in point, most games require no more than 256MB of memory for texture storage, and I doubt that will be changing anytime soon, especially with the superb texture compression offered by DXTC and S3TC technologies.
The only reason for a 512MB gaming card would be for uncompressed texture storage, meaning Doom 3 is probably the only current game that can effectively utilize a graphics accelerator with so much memory. Synthetic benchmarks are another issue altogether, but most gamers honestly care less about 3DMark scores.
On the flip side, 512MB (and more!) of local memory is common for professional 3D cards. In addition to a gaming card, I suspect a new ATI FireGL 512MB model will soon be announced.

From what I've heard, it's gonna be an x850 with 512MB RAM. There has been some talk about XDR RAM, but I doubt that it will make it's debut on the current series.

That's a nice card, but I don't think anyone would really need it right now. |
