    Is this compatible?

    I'm doing a report, so I was wondering-Are graphics cards with 8x/4x compatible with a 1x/2x slot?

But, are 1x/2x compatible with today's AGP? Thanks, by the way.

AGP 4x cards are compatible in AGP 8x slots, but that's it, AGP 1x and 2x cards can't run in AGP 4x/8x slots because of the voltage difference

there are many boards that will accept 1x/2x/4x/8x and there are also a few cards that will too but the cards are more rare

thank you for answer the question I was just about to ask.

I have an ATI Rage Mobility AGP 2x 8mb card in my AGP 4x/8x mobo, runs great for now

I guess I got lucky for once

I was wondering why Everest said my AGP could accept 1x-8x. But, in general, no.

    There is no "in general".

Boards as well as cards can be "universal", supporting both 3.3V and 1.5V signalling for 1x/2x and 4x/8x modes respectively.

Recent boards are NOT universal anymore, only supporting 1.5V signalling. Cards that are 3.3V-only (1x/2x-ONLY cards) will neither fit nor work. (That's what the key tab and notch are for; if they don't line up, you can't insert the card ... because it wouldn't work anyway.)

There are some select recent graphics chips that don't support 3.3V signalling anymore, e.g. ATI Radeon 9600, 9800 and X800 chip families. These won't fit or work in 1x/2x-ONLY mainboards. Others, like the 92X0 family, support both signalling voltage levels and work everywhere.

Peter - In short, if your card is 8x, it is compatible with 4x, and ought to work in a 4x/2x "Universal" slot, provided everything is keyed and tabbed correctly?

Yes. 8x gear must, by definition of the standard, be backward compatible to 4x mode. That applies to cards and mainboards.
