well it all depends on wat your gonna do...if heavy gaming(doom 3,hl2 farcry etc)
try and save up for 6600gt( its a WHOLE lot better) they have a chaintech pci express 6600gt for $170 on newegg , if it's just for sum minor gaming you could get a 6600 but try and get the 256mb if you play at high resolutions

IMO you would get a pretty good gaming rig if you could get either a 6600 or a 6600GT. Its just a bit over 150 USD so I think you should go for it.

Its not only clock speeds. Its the pipelines. I have a 9600Xt who's clock speeds blow my friend's vidio card out of the water. But he gets better frame rates because i hve 4 pipelines and he has 12.

i say save up your money a tad more and go for a 6600gt. Best cad for value. Can beat 9800 pro and xt.But if not just go with something like a radeon 9600xt or geforce 6600.

well thnx again for the replies ..now the problem is that i dont live in the US..i'm from India and back here things are'nt that freely available and are just a little costly.. so my dreams of getting a 6600GT are still gonna remain dreams .. and plus i'm not a heavy gamer i jus wanna make sure that just the basic games work well all my EA sports , NFS versions etc.. not much into DOOM3 n Farcry n CS..etc

well i just checked out the Radeon 9600XT and it doesnt belong to the PCI xpress interface ...so that's completely ruled out .. now i have only 6600 left .. now among the varities in them ..please help me choose a good one ..

Also how do i check for the number of pipelines what should be the other specifcitions i shud look out for ..considering that i will buying only an 6600.. so among the 6600's which shud i go in for .. how do i knw if the choice i'm makin' is right ...
    thnx again ..
    Naks

p.s. In newegg .. it display's all 6600's 256MB cards.. which one do i choose seeing the specs mentioned there..??

ya, pipelines do play a big role...i think normal 6600s have 4 pipelines(not sure though) and all of the 6600s should be the same no matter wat manufacturer they come from( except for software bundled and warranty) i would go with a bfg
6600...lifetime warranty and oc'd a little bit by them( if they make it )
but in general, when looking for a video card look for # of pixel pipelines,# of vertex pipelines( not as important), amount of memory, type of memory(ddr or gddr3 ) and clock speed

All 6600's, GT or not, have 8 pipes. The only difference is the GPU and memory speeds. Significantly slower on the non-GT model, well about half the speed on the memory... I believe that is due to the GT model having GDDR3 RAM.

If you have the money, they best card to get is the Rosewill 6600GT from newegg. Only $180. Not a lot of people have heard of that brand, but the board and chips are the exact same as those on the Albatron model and that is a top performer in the 6600 line. The base 6600, even 256MB version, won't hold up in today's and the rest of the year's games. And for only $40 more than the 6600, get the GT for nearly, if not always, double the performance in higher resolutions.

For the money, it's not too bad. But you can find a lot better. You gonna be creating games or what? What's your price range?

I think he already stated that there was no way he could spend that much, but whatever.

A Geforce 6600 256MB will be the best you can get for under $120... Check pricewatch.

Ur not compeltely wrong. Pipeline is to benefit the GPU core bandwidth. The more the marrier. But if there are too much, it causes fragilty. Thats y its so dangerous to open up pipes using tweak mods. People get dead cards and corruptions permenant sometimes.
