| GeForce 5500 256mb PCI card @ Battlefield2
I know that the games readme file doesnt say it supports this card but I just want to know if anyone had any luck with it. I have tried 9200se 128mb pci card and 9250 256mb pci card and both dont work. I dont think those cards are directx9 compatible and the 5500 is. Im thinking about buying the 5500 but if it doesnt play with Battlefield2 then I wont purchase it. Thanks |

The minimum nVidia chipset required is the FX5700. There is a PCI version of it, but I have read that no PCI cards are supported in BF2. |

PCI will not work.
You will be better off buying a new mobo with agp support and a refurbished 9800Pro for ~ $90.

I have heard that I should change mobo. I have never changed one before so Im farely new at this. I have a 2.5ghz celeron processor hp a317x. I believe the slot is 478. Any suggestions on how and what I need besides the parts and memory I already have? |

Your celeron is definitely a socket 478. In addition to a new motherboard, you will most likely need a new power supply unit (psu), maybe need a new case, and will have to reformat your HDD which will require you have a copy of Windows (that isn't a HP Restore Disk). Almost forgot, you'll need an AGP video card that meets BF2's requirements too.
What kind of budget do you have for an upgrade? |

I was in the SAME SHOES as you were.
Windows XP Home OEM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16837102151
This is the motherboard I use- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...186-047&depa=0
This is an excellent PSU, I use that also: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...153-006&depa=1
A refurbished 9800pro, cheapest price newegg's got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814164025R
This is my card, but I highly recommend you save the extra money for the 9800pro, you wont regret that. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102410
These are the cheapest prices I've found, I am a budgeteer.
Save up them moneys! Make sure you get the OEM, I'm still saving for an OEM because I haven't reformatted yet. Not reformatting results in crappy video card performance, trust me. I have a 9600pro, its lagging on classic counter strike at lowest settings. Its acting like my crappy integrated graphics.
Reformatting may erase the stuff in your My Documents folder and such. You're gonna have to sacrifice your Program Files, you can't restore those I think. You're gonnna end up reinstalling all your games. Backup files, highly recommended.
I don't know anything about HP's and cases, but I'm sure you can find one on newegg.

Thanks alot mj for the links. I looked into mobo's and I just have to buy a new tower. No problem with that. All I need is a good mobo with processor since I dont want to use the 2.5ghz celeron, a power cable, a good card and that seems like it. I hope. I have the drives and memory already. Oh yeah mj, how did you OC'ed your processor? Give me some pointers. |

Im trying to stay around $500. I think I can get an ok mobo with processor, card and tower for that. Game demands are high, technology only gets better. Time to upgrade. Hey mj what happened with your OEM? |

Oh, since my computer was orginally a low-end eMachines, those boobs who work there decided to give me a stupid recovery disk instead of an OEM. I must remind you that recovery disks that came with the computer (and meant for the system) DOES NOT reformat a HDD on a new mobo fresh.
So, since I've learned that little error, I've backed up my files to my laptop, and all I can do now is simple gaming, and basic computer stuff, which is why I've been on TIMO the whole time The reason why is that the Windows XP that was preinstalled on my system matches the chipset drivers (that my video card uses) on my old mobo, not my new one. So my video card is acting like integrated graphics! (GASP, NO! I'M RELIVING THE INTEGRATED GFX NIGHTMARE!) I'm still ransacking my house for coins so I can buy that dern OEM off newegg... |
