    Bottlenecking a 7800GT

I am planning a rebuild, and thinking of trading in my comp for a part trade. The new stuff is all pretty expensive and I doubt I would be getting much better than an AMD Venice 64 Core 3000+/3200+. Likely still have the gig of ram, assuming I can use this DDR400 with the new mobo and processor. Which leaves me with wanting to go with a 7800GT for the graphics card.

Will placing a 7800gt with a slower processor be a waste, or do you guys figure it would all even out. I could go with a faster processor and a cheaper vid card, but that wouldn't help with gaming I don't think.

I googled around but didn't really find much on the subject, since most people who were buying a 7800gt were buying the new FX-51 processors to go with it.

I think the 7800gt will be fine for the system, i got that now and can play every game at max except bf2 i have to turn to 2x instead of 4x aa, but who cares (1 more gig of ram would probably cure that)

I'd say if you can afford it, go with the 3700+ sandeago amd 64, has the 1mb L2 cache like the FX-51 and i have my clocked to almost the same speed as the FX-51, thing flys.

I will have to see really. Everything is pricey, though it's really the vid card that eats up most of that cost, heh. Another thing I noticed was you can get a 6800GT with 512mb of ram for the same price as 7800gt with 256. I know the 7 series is better, but couldn't find anything on tom's or with google about benchmarks on a 512 6800gt. 512mb of video ram is alot, damn.

Think it's better to go with a cheaper vid card and a better proc, or just get the 7800gt? It's kind of a toss to me really. A faster proc will retain lost frame rates, but perhaps the visual quality will be less in the end anyways. Though I don't even know if something like an x800 would look any different than a 7800gt?

Actually I tried the combo of the A64 3000+ venice and 7800GT and there was a bottleneck, especially in CS:S and HL2. I'd get a better processor and maybe a video card a little less exensive.
