6600GT still good nowadays? o_o;
Yes, this is another graphics-card thread, and I know how much you TIMO'ers LOVE to post here xD
I was just asking if there would be a performance increase in games I play...
So far, I have the Sapphire Radeon 9600pro in my system, and yes, I'm still stuck in the AGP craze. I mean, I actually just ENTERED the AGP'ness of gaming
...
Its a great card, by the way, it plays most of my games (Halo, GTA III, WoW, Warcraft III, etc..) just fine.
But since I just got a processor upgrade, I'm thinking I'm gonna want more out of my system after the demos and newer games I've purchased (Games with all the graphical effects compareable to Doom III, and the Source engine). Recently I've been looking at this card: The eVGA GeForce 6600GT, to perhaps take a break from ATi cards.
Now I'm no overclocker, nor am I going to get the latest first-person-shooter once it hits the shelves, I just want a performance boost to smoothen up the frame rates, and get less stuttering and crap like that in my current games, with some games that are at most a year old. Is the 6600GT still good nowadays? I keep planning on getting it, but I usually had to buy another upgrade to fix my system up some more. And its been a while since I did a video card upgrade, and I need to know if this will be a wise upgrade
Heres what I got:
- Pentium 4 Prescott 3.0E Socket 478
- Windows XP Home SP2
- 1GB PC2700 ram (PC3200 512 Corsair value + PC2700 512 Samsung)
- Sapphire Radeon 9600pro Advantage Edition AGP 256mb
- ThermalTake 420w ATX PSU (thinking of upgrading to that FSP power supply to reduce the fan noise issue soon)
- Gigabyte GA-8I848P-G ATX Mobo

Sell the pc2700 and get another 512mb stick of pc3200, that alone will help you in frame rates.
A 6600gt is still a good mid range card, and will defnaely be nicer then your 9600pro, BUT personally, I would save a bit more and get somethng that will last you longer, perhaps a 6800GS.
I see you are n the same boat as me, my motherboard also only supports single channel, which hurts out cpu's performance somewhat. (MSI 848P Neo-V)
I was fine with my Ti4200 for a long time and I know I still would be, if it could run all games. which sadly it can't anymore due to lack of certan features.
So basically
-Sell the pc2700, and buy another 512mb stick of pc3200 as that alone will give you a good frame rate boost
and
-Keep the 9600pro a little longer and save up for somethng a little more future proofMain PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit
File Server: AMD Opteron 180 / 3gb DDR400 / Nvidia 6200 / WinXP Home 32bit / Lubuntu 12.10
Laptop: HP-Compaq nc8430/ Intel CoreDuo T2400 / 2gb DDR2 667/ Ati x1600 / WinXP Pro 32bit

Well, I do have the Corsair value ram in my system, which is this right here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145026
So perhaps I'll buy another one of that with my FSP power supply I'm going to get soon.
Anyone else have a post or two to share?

Wel i actually think your memory is fine, pc 2700 pc 3200, the differene is your speed isnt going to improve the framerate of games as much as a 9600 pro to a 6600gt.
my 6600gt has been a great performer & there is absouloutly no reason i will upgrade it just yet, i mean 50 fps or 75 fps really dosnt bother me for the price of a new 6800gs or higher.
thats what i think.

Well, the prices on the 6600GT have dropped some since they came out
so if I were you (looking at your current system) I would go for it. But if you are planning to get some of the newer games that are more demanding (when they come out) then I would save up for a new video card and just upgrade the ram a little bit.

oh yes, I forgot to post about my budget, generally under 140-150 dollars, if anyone has any alternatvies suggestions... o_o
Yeah, thats what I try to keep my games in; the 50-75+FPS range. I was wondering how good the 600GT would perform in games with graphics compareable to games with the source engine, or similar with all the fancy shading in doom III.
Anti-Aliasing, I'll ignore, at most I'll keep it at 2x, I don't really care about it that much for now.... same goes to AA. o_o, my resolution is only 1024x768 xD
I'm not exactly rarin' to get that latest first-person shooter with graphics that rape a system xD
Just games at most a year old...

I'd wait and get a better card later on.
Whilst dzee may be correct in saying a 6600GT can play today's games, tomorrow's games will demand more than a 6600GT can give.
In the long-term, what's cheaper? An okay card now followed by an upgrade later, or a great card now which will last well past later?

In terms of price I'd go with #2, but in terms of performance I'd go w/ #1..... The G80's gonna be out soon featuring DX10 support, 48ps about 700MHz on the core and about 2GHz on the memory....
I dunno if they're gonna throw it the 7900Ultra or in the 8k series.... but it's gonna be here.....err..... this summer..... something like that....
Now that's a card.... I wonder of ATI will come out with another chip or stick with the R520
.... I dunno..... but I know it's gonna be a 'HOT' summer....... LOL

It IS leet. But now, I have lost that feeling of leetness, since I'm am over the 1337 number v_v
I'm not really that interested in getting the newest in graphical games, I do plan on using it on the STILL demanding games that are aged almost a year ago... like san andreas. Right now I'm getting 30-40 framerates. :P And I'd like to see a little more performance in games with lots of players in it. xD Like a big game of CSS.
So, I'll get that PSU (need it anyway), and spend the extra 30 bux on the PC3200 RAM (Corsair valueselect) and then save up for a 6600GT?
Hows that plan?Mac Mini—2Ghz—2GB RAM—Snow Leopard

Well, as long as you don't have dreams of building a new computer soon from the ground up, then I would go for it. Your computer would be fairly good for the next year and a half or so...

If I were you and I'd decided to go for the 6600GT nowadays, I'd try to get it second hand if possible.

I wouldnt bother upgrading the memory from pc 2700 to pc 3200, id keep that money & bam you have 25-50% of the 6600gt price (not sure how much it costs in usa)

Normally I would say save up for the 6800 gs as the pci-e ones are about 30 dollars more than a 6600 gt but the cheapest agp gs on newegg is about 230 bucks which is quite a bit out of your price range.

Heres a list of the AGP cards for the 6800GS...
Would the eVGA 6600GT still be better than the first two (still somewhere about in my price range, I can save just a little bit more) since it has GDDR3 memory with 128mb? o_o;
