I wouldnt buy a video card based on what resolution size you get. I would buy it on how many FPS you get in games, and how it performs in other areas.

If you got the money, Sure. Ur 1280 x 1024 will look purty smooth!
Although, i'd suggest something cheaper.

Majority of the people with a non-widescreen LCD have that MAX res. That doesnt effect their GFX card choice.

Shouldn't be a problem, and 1280x1024 is a great resolution to run for games. Not the highest of course, but more than enough for eye candy.

Just for precautions, what are the rest of your system specifications, including your power supply?

My monitor is about 5 years old. At the time I bought the top end though. It does 1600x1200 which my new 1800xt can run HL2 at smooth as glass.

I was thinking about the 1900xt but i was able to pick up the 1800xt 512mb for 299 from newegg. Hard for me to spend the extra. You should be able to play any game you want at 1280x1024 with a 1900xt with all the options on. But you could probably do the same with an 1800xt. Also you may get the urge to upgrade your monitor after getting a fancy card.

It's probably not worth it, but do consider if there is any chance of you upgrading your monitor in the next couple of years, and look at benchmarks to see what card gets ~60fps in the most recent games at 1280x1024.

Actually, now that I did that (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2717&p=7) I think a 1900xtx would be perfect.

Get the card, its WELL worth it. I have one and I play my games at 1280x1024. Games like Oblivion and FEAR won't play very well on resolutons higher than that even with a 1900XTX, so yeah... Its worht it.

for 1280x1024? I'd buy the x1900xt and OC it (or not, which is also still fine). You'll outperform the XTX if need be.
