    Question on SLI

I see mobo companies like ASUS claim that there mobo offers full 16x bandwidth in SLI mode. Was SLI originally only limited to an 8x bandwith for each card and they are now coming out with mobos cabable of full 16x for both cards??

Also, what is the performance difference between a 7900 gtx and a 7950gx2? It must not be much, right? And for the hardcore in here, how's the performance for Quad SLI (two 7950s)?It seems like that'd be a waste of money to me...

well a single 7900GT or x1800 or x1900 can play all of todays games, but SLI is a way to play all of todays games a brag about the extra 25-30 frames. so in a way it is a waste unless it is a long term investment and you plan on using the cards for a really long time.

Also, 8x bandwidth is plenty fast for todays cards, even AGP would still be ok for the newest cards. I think that right now SLI isn't really cost effective, and like Dethrattle said, the biggest use of it is to brag about it. One high end card will be able to run games on high setting fine.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking as well. Just a waste of money at the moment. At least until the devs start to REALLY take advantage of SLI and get better at programming for it.

The 7950gx2 has 2 cores on the card, so it is like have SLI on 1 card (I think it has 2 cores, anyways).

Thats what I was just thinking to, get a good card, then later when it is a lot cheaper get another one and do SLI. And yes, Reather is right, it does have 2 cores on it.
