i have a dell 8200 for a second machine and upgraded to an ATI Sapphire X800 Pro a few years ago...don't know how it measures up to a 7600 GT...but i've been happy with it. 'osprey4' is right on the rambus prices...there outta sight. you could build a decent machine for what the ram cost for one of these dells

BF2 might not run to well with 512MB ram.
A new video card will give you best performance upgrade. But, your CPU and RAM are going to be bottlenecking your system ALOT.
IMO(in my opinion) its not even worth spending the money and trying to play games on par with BF2 with your PC, cause they're not going to running all that smooth.
EDIT: Quote:
Minimum Specification:
CPU: 1.7 GHz
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: nVidia GeForce FX 5700, ATI Radeon 8500 or ATI Radeon 9500 with 128 MB of RAM
Recommended Specification:
CPU: 2.4 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Video Card with at least 256 MB of RAM

BF2 is a RAM eater. If I were you, I'd go for a card like a 7600 GS or simmilar, and try to get a little bit more RAM (Even if you only get 256 megs more for $$ reasons). Here's what I'd suggest: http://www.misco.co.uk/productinform...M%20MEMORY.htm
I didnt search too much, but 2 of those ~ 65 pounds
And one of these: http://www.misco.co.uk/productinform...56MB%20AGP.htm
About 80 pounds.
Total: 145 pounds
It's a little over your price, but BF2 needs RAM, and this would be the best option IMO. I dont know about any England sites, so you can probably find a better store w/ better prices too.
And BTW, welcome to TechIMO!!! |

If the guys at Dell (& Osprey4) say your PC's PSU will run the 7600GT, then you can bet that's true.
Run msconfig & make sure you have as few processes running as possible. That will help your performance with 512Mb of ram. The Elder Geek and Answers That Work - Task Manager are two sites that have helped me minimize my system memory usage. Look up each process on those lists and disable those which aren't necessary.

oh top top guys..!
Thanks for all the info and links doods. Will now be looking for RAM upgrade, possibly via buying one of these machines from eBay and stealing its guts.!!
Or a cheap RAM dood site.
GS over GT will save some cash too, what about performace, are they massively different..?
Any links on cheap RDRAM let me have em..! |

Heres another option guys, I've just seen a Dell Dimension 8200 on eBay with Pentium 4, 3.0Ghz Processor.
How expensive and easy would it be to buy a new faster processor to breath some life into the old girl..? Along with the RAM and Graphics upgrade of course..?
This item on eBay is a Pentium P4 3.2 Ghz 478 Pin Chip. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INTEL-PENTIUM-...QQcmdZViewItem
1) Would my 8200 accept this and be able to use it..? Would the Mother board handle it..?
2) Any Bios upgrade required or anything..?

Mr Niceguy gave a great link to my machines spec.
Part of it states this.. Microprocessor
Microprocessor type
Intel® Pentium® 4 microprocessor
1.50, 1.60, 1.80, 1.90, 2.00, 2.20, or 2.40 GHz (400 MHz); or
2.26, 2.40, 2.53, 2.66, or 2.80 GHz (533 MHz)
L1 cache
8 KB first-level
L2 cache
256-KB or 512-KB (displayed in the system setup program) pipelined-burst, eight-way set associative, write-back SRAM
So again will my machine which has the 2.26GHz P4 at 533MHz be able to use a P4 3.4GHz 800MHz chip I'm looking to upgrade to, or is the max for the mother board 2.8 or any chip i can find witha 533 MHz speed..?
Or is it just that the above data was upto date Dell did it and the MB can take anything you throw at it..?
Cheers Guys

i believe that you would need to find a (533mhz bus speed) cpu... i don't think it would take the (800mhz bus speed) ..
i am not into "Intel" ..more of an AMD guy, but i have messed around with some..
your best bet would be to get the highest "533" cpu ...

8200 Intel 850/850E
Socket 478 - Willamette, Northwood,
400 MHz bus, 533 MHz bus (some)
PC800 RDRAM (dual-channel) ****Requires 40ns memory (not 45ns) when using 533 MHz bus****
those seem to be the specs for the 8200 ...
if using a 533mhz FSB cpu, you need to run 40ns memory
if using a 400mhz FSB cpu, you need to run 45ns memory
hmmm... Dell's are so picky... (especially older ones) |
