| Wide screen LCD and vid card
I'm going to get an LCD wide screen monitor. Probably around a 22 incher. It seems that my ATI AIW 9600 pro doesn't support the resolutions needed. I don't play games but do require something that will support a digital monitor of that size. Like to keep the vid card under $100. What suggestions do you have? Any advantage of the 16x10 over 16x9 aspect ratios?

Are you sure? I have a meager GF ti4200 card and it's not part of the standard resolution slider but I can add a custom resolution for the card to use with my widescreen. It's part of the Nvidia control panel. ATI may (should) have one too. |

The 9600 easily supports the 1680x1050 resolution. Note that you don't get to see it in the list of resolutions until you connect a monitor that supports it, or uncheck the "Hide modes this monitor can't display" control. |

Peter M thats great news for me. Thanks so much for the information. I'm going by what the ATI web site had listed. Sure hope the information is correct because I'm off to buy a monitor. |

I'm assuming you'll be using DVI cables. If your card supports it, you'll be okay. It should adjust automatically to your monitor's native resolution.

i have a 9600xt and it can run my 20 inch widescreen 1680 x 1050 @ 60hz no worries, but will not go any further with refresh rates. just depends how picky you are about that kinda stuff but hopefully this helps. |

LCDs don't "refresh", all pixels are on all the time. Hence, refresh rate is totally irrelevant. |

I bought a ViewSonic VX2235WM. It's a 22 incher. Man I love this monitor. After my old 17 inch CRT this seems massive. There has got to be at least twice as much real estate. Now I have to save up for a couple digital out AGP cards and a KVM switch to go with it. Until then its analog. Still amazes me. I bought the monitor from Costco for $299. Seemed like a pretty decent price to me. Geez I'm still amazed at the size. |
