ati x1900 xtx 512mb overheating/ random crashing

alright my friend has an ati x1900 xtx 512mb and a few days ago it just started randomly giving overheating errors and when he tried to open some games it wouldnt load and the game would crash, and it would bring up the vpu message during gameplay saying it was running too hot, and the game would crash. and he updated the drivers and that didnt help any, and at idle the graphics card is running at 73 degrees celcious, which is hot, and his fan on the card sounds likes its stressed out all the time, so i dont know if its still a driver issue or if the fan on the card is going out or what, any information what so ever would be helpful, thank you.
