Question
DVI output to DVI LCD monitor... ??

Ok.. i had been using "analog" from my 9800 pro to my new LCD monitor... it has DVI and VGA ... well, i got a 6800 and decided to use the DVI output of the card to the LCD DVI input of the monitor....

except when it was running at 75hz for the resoluton rate.. it looked as though there was "tiny" dots.. like artifacting on the screen... ?? I had it running at 75 running VGA mode no problems..

now i had to switch it back down to 60hz for the resolution rate... which seems a tad bit harder on the eyes... ??

why is this...? is this common... ??

how much better is DVI the VGA ... if any better..?

thanks

What resolution are you using? Single link DVI is limited to 1600x1200x60MHz.

Also, the Nvidia 6 series have known bandwidth isues with the on-die DVI transmitter, limiting your maximum resolution + refresh rate even further.

I had the same problem with my new LCD. I've had to reduce the refresh rate to 48Hz when running 1680x1050(wide screen) to get the artifacts to quit. I'm going to try the VGA cable this weekend to see what (if either) looks better.

well... i am running the max my LCD will run, which is 1440X900 .. but with DVI it only allows 60hz ... i guess it's been fine... i have gotten use to it now... using the VGA at 75hz... it seemd a little more softer... i guess that's the right wording.. LOL ..

it's pretty crisp with the 60hz at 1440X900 ... I was just wondering if the artifacts were comming from my card (EVGA 6800 128mb agp) or my monitor ...

What kind of monitor do you have? Sounds like an inexpensive one.

However, if you notice the difference between 60Hz and 75Hz on an LCD, your brain is playing tricks on you, because there is no screen flicker or anything.

Unless your LCD sucks, DVI will have a sharper picture than VGA. The difference on my Samsungs is noticeable.

that's what i mean... the DVI produced a sharper image... compared to VGA which seemed like the fonts were a bit smoother or bolder ...

it's a Envision 19" LCD widescreen... I wouldn't say it's cheap or anything...

Dot "twinkle" is a sign of poor DVI signal ... something that older NVidia cards are quite notorious for.

But nevermind, LCDs do not "refresh" and hence do not flicker, regardless of the image rate you feed them. 60 Hz is OK, and is actually the recommended setting.
