    Question no video on screen?

    Hey,

I've run into a bit of a problem with my computer. All video files (including MPEG, AVI, and WMV) will play sound but where the video is supposed to be showing will be just a black box. I've tried using WMP, VLC, Quicktime, and Intervideo WinDVD, but nothing works. They all have this problem with DVDs or video files. I would note that this is only for local files...playing YouTube videos works normally.

I've restored my system to when I originally purchased it, I've reinstalled my media clients, I've updated DirectX, and I've even reinstalled my video card. Nothing seems to work. Do I have to reinstall Windows, or is this a codec problem, or what? My video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon X300 chip, and I'm running XP Pro.

    Thanks for any help,

    Moe Jones

Just to be sure it's not codec related, I advice you to download and install K-Lite codec pack.

if it still won't show any image.......do you have your tv hooked to your videocard for the option of playing videos on yer tv from yer computer?? If so, it might be a config problem where it thenm would probably show on the tv instead of the pc screen.

I agree with Ultima. It sounds like your "video overlay" is set to use an incorrect screen (e.g. the TV, or maybe a 2nd monitor). You should be able to re-set which screen uses video overlay in your display properties.

If for whatever reason you don't want to do that (e.g. you normally want videos on the "other" screen"), then you will have to tell each application to NOT use hardware video overlay. There will be a slight performance hit, but today's super fast computer can easily handle it.
