I'm looking for some opinions on going for a monitor or a HDTV for an upgrade on my system. Right now I'm using an older Samsung LCD model that doesn't have an DVI connection and well I kind of want to look to the future. Since I plan on getting a PS3 and I do want to see my games in some nice graphics on my PS3 and computer I was figuring maybe I could get a HDTV. I'm just really wondering if it would be worth it to get a HDTV over a monitor upgrade just for my pc. Thanks for your help and opinions folks.

In my honest opinion, the monitor upgrade sounds cheaper than the LCD HDTV. Man I wish I was as lucky as you to be able to afford an LCD HDTV. Uh by the way I noticed your username is Minimum. Well don't let that hold you back, go maximum and get an LCD HDTV. I use LCD monitors for my computers and let me tell you, they do kick CRT butt. Plus monitors are really heavy, never going back to CRT ever.

The only real reason why I can afford something like this is because of my current situation. As of this moment I am in the middle of the desert taking a quick break from the flightline to type this message. Making money in the middle of nowhere with tax free has its benefits. I'll look into this a little more when I get back home but right now it's up in the air. |

typically the resolution for an LCD hdtv is 1366x768, this resolution is not enough pixels to make a very good pc monitor, especially for the size, especially for the size most of them come at...for gaming it will be awesome but for every day PC use it will be difficult
The price of LCD TV's has dropped quite a bit in the last couple months, after the super bowl they will probobally drop a little more, If you can get a deal on a TV its pretty easy to find a cheap 19" for day to day stuff for an extra $120

Grab a huge Samsung DLP for cheap. Since you are planning on buying a PS3, make sure the television is 1080P and has HDMI ports. MOst of the Samsungs have a VGA port to hook up your PC.

I recently got a 22" Sceptre widescreen monitor. It has VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports on it. My understanding is it will support 1080p when using the HDMI port. I can't confirm that because I only have the DVI output from my PC plugged into it. |

Don't ever get a Samsung TV.
It really depends on the size of the upgrade, Minimum. If you're going big big, you should definitely run with an HDTV.
Cost is another factor. Headband has a point with most LCD HDTVs being 1366x768, and they don't really render text very well at that resolution. But many companies are putting out 1080p LCD TVs now, and they look really good. Costly though.
You're looking at $1,000 for a decent 26" LCD TV that's 1366x768 and won't really look great as a computer monitor (games look just fine, but desktop isn't real sharp). So if you haven't got a budget for more, you should probably just go with a monitor upgrade. |

Thanks for all of the suggestions and opinions folks. I guess if I had more money to play with then it would be a worthwhile purchase. Seeing as how I'm going to drop $5k on my car to pay it off when I get back that won't really leave a nice chunk to play with for a good tv. It's just nice to browse and get an idea of what I could get for my intended purpose. I think I'll browse a little harder for an upgrade for my monitor. I can always do dual monitor anyway if I really wanted. Thanks again. |
