| Lockups with my new x1950 pro
Sometimes when i play a 3d game, like Battlefield 2142 or World of Warcraft, my computer hangs. The screen goes black, sometimes i can still hear the ingame sound continue for a few seconds and sometimes i only hear krackles and a beep. The fan of the VGA card goes into high rpm.
When i restart the pc seems to work good, but when i start a 3d game or program (even the 3d app in the catalist cp) the pc locks up very quickly.
Also worth mentioning: When i open the cp and go to ati overdrive, a few tenths of a sec i see the normal screen, the bars to overclock memory and cpu. but then is says "ATI Overdrive capabilities have not been properly initialized yet. Please try again later" I never saw the right screen, so i didn't overclock before.
Things i tried:
- Updating all drivers and the Motherboard bios
- Pulling the plug after a lockup, so there is no power to the pc anymore, then turn it on again.
- feeling the vga card how hot is was > never too hot.
- logging the temperatures of the card with "rivatuner", tey show the temps are normal all the way too.
- Romoving all memory sticks and use one other module.
My Specs:
Asus Mainboard M2R32-MVP
AMD CPU Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 65 Watt 2.2 GHz, 1000 MHz, Boxed
Sapphire VGA Radeon X1950 Pro 256 MB
Corsair TWIN2X 1024A-6400 1024 MB, PC6400, 800 MHz, 5, Kit Of 2
Thermaltake Toughpower 700 Watt ActivePFC, EPS12V, 20/24-pins
Does anyone have any Idea what this can be? |

it's been a couple months lol...anything could've happened...reformat again just in case adn that should solve any problems or you can try installing the video card again...I've heard the video cards could buildup a lot of dust and residue and installing it again should remove any lol...do it a couple times if neccessary... |

You said you touched the card. Did you touch the card or the heatsink? If you touched the card, touch the heatsink, that's the part that gets hot.
Also, you could try reseating your videocard (pulling it out and putting it back in).

Welcome to TechIMO!
Have you tried rolling back to older drivers?
Is it possible to try the card in another computer? (with a powersupply up to the task of course!)
Can you try another similar card in this computer?
Does it happen on all games?
Are you getting good readings from your power supply?
The krackling sounds are what make me worried.

If your GPU isnt overheating, it may something else. CPU could be overheating: the high RPM sound may be coming from your CPU HSF.
That power supply should be more than enough. Do you have a power connector plugged directly into the card? If not, you need to do so.
What games have you tried?
Try running 3dmark and tell us if it ran alright and finishes. |
