| What Have I got? Laptop vid chipset woes
I just bought a refurbed HP Laptop that, depending on who you believe, has one of 3 differing video chipsets in it. At the moment, the video showing in control Panel is simply called VGASave (I think). OS is XP Professional
It was advertised as having a GeForce Go 7600 chipset, a big selling point to me. However, digging around in the system shows a driver/resource conflict with the ubiquitous Intel 950 chipset.
A check of the HP website is no help, since evidently this model shipped with both the Intel and two differing Nvidia chipsets (Go 7400 and Go 7600), just depending.
I tried installing a set of GeForce Go 7400 drivers and borked the system so badly I had to do a complete "back to the way it came out of the box" restore. I'd rather not have to do that again.
So, how can I tell what I've really got, and, more importantly, how do I change it over from the fail-safe thingy I've got running there? I can't seem to locate the right button to make a change once I do figger out what's in there.

HP dv8327us is the model. Seems I have the Intel 945 chipset. Thanks for the link to the Everest site. Damned if I can figure out how to get the system unstuck from this default VGA driver. It's been too long since I got under the hood of XP, I guess. |

Here's the link to all the drivers for your laptop.
They "should" work.
You download them, they install into a folder, then you run the setup for each one thats in each area of the newly made folder. |

The system analysis tools seem to say it's the Intel 945 chipset. Trouble seems to be that every time I boot up, the system finds the generic VGA driver and starts it up and then says that the Intel video can't start.
This is despite repeated deletions, disablement and general abuse of the VGASave generic video device. The little booger just keeps coming back, getting found on restart and generally getting in the way. I'm starting to lose my patience with this thing.... |

Turns out the advisor was wrong. I downloaded the nvidia drivers from the HP website, deleted the ersatz Intel 945 adapter in the Device manager, ran the install on the Nvidia stuff and after a hert-stoppingly long reboot, all was well.
I think I originally got the drivers from someplace else and that could have been what borked things up in the first place, leading me to assume I had the Intel chipset. Well, that and the Everest dealie missing the boat on it.
Thanks, all. Sorry it took me so long to get it. It just been a while since I had to get under the hood. |
