Question Do I Need A New Monitor?

    Ola guys.

Three days ago, I was viewing a Web page using Mozilla Firefox when the left and right edges of the Firefox window started to bend into curve (the curved spaces turned black). Soon after that sudden bent, those edges kept moving inside and out of the window (partially wavy). I could smell an unexplainable smoke from the back of my Compaq S500 CRT monitor, and although I didn't see any real smoke or flame, I suspected something's burned because now, everytime I adjust the vertical and horizontal properties of any window using the monitor's built-in controllers, I simply get improper results. In addition, I used AIDA32 to check my monitor's properties but as I've expected, nothing appeared!

A day after the problem bothered me, I ran a Direct-X diagnostic (dxdiag) so as to check if there's anything wrong with my integrated Intel 82815 Graphics Controller (I'm not using any graphics card). The results showed me I have all mandatory drivers, and there's simply nothing amiss.

    What do you think?
    A new monitor?

    Thanks!

Sounds like something in a control board died or is dying. Time for a new monitor.

That's the universal sign for "get a new one."

There are some of us who wish there were easy ways to create "unexplained smoke", so we could convince our wives of the need for more frequent upgrades.

Yep, the smoke is the smoke that keeps the device working. Without that smoke, it starts doing weird things, like you said it was.

If you can, look into an LCD monitor. They're fairly inexpensive now and I've noticed that a lot of stores only sell LCDs now anyway.

Yeah, the technical term is "magic smoke." See, most people think electricity runs through wires, but they're actually just tiny "smoke pipes." As long as the smoke is contained within the closed sytem, the device works fine. But as soon as there's a break somewhere that allows the magic smoke to escape, the enchantment wears off and the device stops working. And it's generally difficult to put the smoke back into the device, so you end up needing a new one.

Yeah, an LCD would be a good bet, though if you don't mind the space it takes up, it's usually not very hard to find a dirt cheap/free CRT monitor.

    OK.
    Thanks for your guys confirmation.
My monitor had completely turned black, and this is the first time I never on-line for more than 5 days since 2005! (currently using my brother's monitor)
    Have a good day/night!
