Problems with 7900gt

i didn't think i would have to worry about this but it is really starting to bug me. i play a lot of cs: source across lan with my girlfriend, and noticed something unusual about the overall performance on my machine vs. hers.

my specs are as follows:

stock e6300 (1.86ghz)
gigabyte 965p-ds3 (rev 2.0)
kingston 2gig kit 667
250gig seagate sata hdd
gigabyte 7900gt (256mb)

and hers is as follows:

am2 3000+ @ stock
gigabyte m55sli-s4
1gig generic 667 (2 x 512)
80gig seagate sata hdd
msi 7600gt (256mb)

our in game video settings (AA, AF, HDR etc) are all set to the same thing, the only difference being that i am using a 20" benq ws and hers is a benq regular 17". i notice that the response of the game is not very smooth...my video card appears to be struggling with rendering the video smoothly. the bots appear to "skip" across the screen, and they just appear very glitchy. the same version of the game is installed on my gf's computer, and it appears to be running extremely smoothly, even when using the same settings as my computer.

the only other difference as far as i can see is that my computer is able to display colours much more beautifully that the second computer, whose colours are very inaccurate (it's not as powerful a video card) but this doesn't seem to be worrying me as much as the "smooth" factor.

i may run some tests sometime tomorrow at work, run some benchmarks too, just too see what i can come up with. is there anything equivalent to memtest that can be used to test a video card for errors? any feedback or thoughts would be great.

thanks in advance.

p.s i tried turning the AA off and the AF down to "bilinear" filtering, and i got the microsoft visual c++ runtime error straight after, and the game crashed. i think i might be onto something here...

Your not on Vista, are you? What resolution do you play at? I would think you would max it out a bit if you went out and bought yourself a 7900gt and a 20" screen. Another note, just to be sure, what PSU do you have installed?

Is it just on CS:S or does this happen on other games also? How long has this been going on?

no. source is not really graphics intensive i think. its more of a CPU game. but seeing that your CPU owns hers, i dont see why its a problem. i play source myself on my 7600GT and 3600+ x2 with a 19inch wide and i dont run into any problems.

I think the problem could be the 7900gt. After looking around, it seems the card is the problem.

A link to check

The 7900GT problem was addressed by Nvidia long ago. I doubt its his problem.
It had to do with OC'ed 7900GT's. The problem was fixed a while ago.

1 difference is your 20" proly uses a much bigger resolution than your GF's 17".

Who is hosting the LAN? Usually the host gets the best performance.
Is it smooth playing online? Whats your ping? How many FPS are you getting?

Do you have a power connecter connected to the front of your GPU?
Vista? Also, what would the C++ error have to do with this?

Possibly something with the Source Engine itself?

Have you tried uninstalling & reinstalling the game (update if necessary)

also, How are your two systems as far as Hard Drive Fragmentation goes? (defrag your HDD if necessary)

How many background process's you have running compared to hers as well (granted you have more RAM, better CPU, but might as well ask anyways?)

How many bots are you playing with?

Its not much, but those bots do use processing power of your own cpu

wow, that's about as much feedback as anyone could stomach!

ok, here's the answers to the feedback...

a) i am using xp pro, same on secondary computer
b) i am using an antec neo HE 550watt psu, and yes, the 6pin pci-e is plugged in
c) i run the game at a resolution of 1680 x 1050, which is native for a 20 inch wide.
d) it doesn't seem to happen very much in other games, only in this one
e) i play the game with about 9 vs 9 bots, no more than 10 a side
f) i have no idea what the C++ error is, i was hoping someone else here would know. it only happened when i disabled AA and AF settings.
g) i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game a lot.

i think based on all your questions i have found out what the problem is. i should have known this from the start and i'm not entirely sure that this is it, but it MUST play some part towards it...

basically i have an official copy of cs:s bought off steam. my gf, however, doesn't. so i have a different version of the game installed at the SAME TIME as the online version, and just keep it for when i'm playing with the mrs. offline. she uses that same offline version, because we aren't able to lan with one online version and one offline version...the versions don't match up.

i have 2 desktop shortcuts for the game, one for 'online' and one for 'offline'. when i hit the offline one, that's what i get, the offline version. when i hit the shortcut for the online one though, and try to join an ONLINE game, it says that my version doesn't match with anything. i HAVE to run the online version THROUGH steam, otherwise i can't join any online games for that. i guess that's another problem solved right there.

PHEW!!! i might try to uninstall the offline version and just run the online version for a bit, see how it goes. there might be some sort of conflict with the multiple installations. it's definitely a chance. i will let you know the results later this evening.

thanks again for all the replies..much appreciated.

but bot processing goes to the CPU so then it will have nothing to do with the GPU

well either way, i have decided to use fraps to test my frame rates, just to see what it brings back. the frames hardly drop below 100, however i am starting to notice that the bots might actually be part of the problem. i have since uninstalled BOTH copies of cs i had installed, and tried reinstalling ONLY the offline version of the game. i am still having the same "skipping" problems with the bots. i really don't know what's going on, but i don't seem to be having the problem with the online version. i would simply put it down to a dodgy version of the game, but my gf's computer is running it flawlessly. i turned off all AA and AF and it's still having the problem. very bizzare. if anyone else has any thoughts or feedback, this would be appreciated.
