| 8800 320MB Vs. 8800 640MB
Hi,
After reviewing Tom's Hardware VGA Charts .. I noticed that the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB more times then not seems to out perform the 8800 640MB card. Questions:
1. How come? Core Clock Speed more important than MB's?
2. Am I better off purchasing the 320 or 640? (I don't think the $ is much different)
3. What does GeForce 8800 GTS 'XXX' mean?
4. Which brand would you recommend? EVGA, SFX, BFG, Sparkle Calibre
5. Between these two cards which would you recommend - Both are $400CND. EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS KO ACS....... OR....... EVGA Geforce 8800 GTS SuperClocked
320MB DDR3 PCIe - 588MHz........................640MB GDDR3 PCIe - 576MHz
Memory Clock 1840MHz................................Memory Clock 1700MHz
Memory Bandwidth 73.6GB...........................Memory Bandwidth 68.0GB
Thanks!

Well first off I would never waste Money on a Factory overclocked card and both of those are .
I got a Evga 8800gts 320 mb For 309 after MIR CND last night and I must say Im happy with it . With the money I saved getting the 320 vs the 640 I can get a nice WB on this card ( im aiming for @ least 700 on the core and ~1000 on the mem )

Personal preferance and name brand loyalty make me want to stick with BFG...
EVGA seems like a cheaper company from their packaging and the general lag they have in getting the current technology. I more often find their "low" end cards then i see them in the latest technology at stores which means that if they do have high end cards, most stores dont feel they will sell. |

Well just so you know EVGA is better than BFG .
Cheeper
Better warenty ( they will cross ship)
and you can change the stock hsf and still have warenty.
Most places push BFG cause they have that PRe overclicked crap .
I would take a Evga over any other NV card any day And I pound the crap out of my cards (* water + volt mods )
edit forgot about the 90 stepup program

EVGA, BFG, and XFX are probably some of the top mainstream NVidia companies. IMO, if you can afford it, the 640 MB version would be a good choice. Newer DirectX 10 games are going to need it. Of course, with the games out now, you wont notice a difference, and more RAM means that it wont overclock as good, but for future-proofing, the extra 320 will help.
Edit: BTW, I'd personally take XFX over all of them.

i went with a leadtek 640mb 8800gts, and i'm very happy with it. however frames in some choppy areas can be low, so i'm thinking that with the recent price drop i will consider a better cpu to compliment it. |

LOL .. I guess that's why they call them opinions! | That should tell you something. They are all good brands.
I have built computers containing cards from all three of them. XFX is my favorite NVidia manufacturer because I've had the best experience with them. There were more cables in the packaging, the drivers and utilities on the driver CD worked flawlessly, and the XFXs were usually a bit cheaper compared to their EVGA counterpart, and definately cheaper than their BFG counterpart.
They all perform simmilarly, and I'd feel comfortable choosing a card from any of them.

I prefer EVGA, but I have XFX, and it's also good. |
