I hope you have a decent PSU, an upgrade like that will often overstress an old power supply
There is no reason to upgrade the memory you have by amount, rather if you feel the need to upgrade, go with speed...
Anything more than 2 gigs of memory is a waste, and using all 4 slots can often cause problems...
Just something to consider...

It's all I could afford at the time.
The E521 o.O
I'm not sure on the processor now. I know a 5600 would work fine on the mobo with dells stupid parts o.O.
the way I know the 8600 will work is the new inspirons that replace the dimension I have, have the same psu and mobo practically. Simple
Just kinda looking for opinions.
I really wanted to upgrade my psu but I found out it was a btx...then found out what that meant like the day I got my computer haha.
Oh well Help?
So, some 305 watt (apparently) btx dell psu.
I hear they undergrade their psus though because 350 watt cards run perfect on them |

I've done enough research into it and enough checking with dell to make sure it would run.
They told me a 7600gt would run...and when I realized the new inspirons, with the same psu, and mobo could run 8600's I looked into it and have found a few people doing it without "jerry-rigging" them
Edit :

That PSU may run for a while, but I wouldn't trust it for too long.
I thought only Intel's were BTX? |

yah. i definatly would not rust it. those guys may have gotten lucky. besides, it may look the same PSU in that newer dell because of the wattage but it could be a better quality supply with more amps on the 12V rail but still be at the same wattage. there is a big difference between a high quality and a low quality PSU even if both are at the same wattage.
with that said, i think dell's stuck supplys are halfway decent. and the 7600GT takes up very little power compared to other cards |

Dell may say it will run but they are not counting any additional upgrades you are doing, such as an extra hard drive. I can say they do make solid products and they definately charge a pretty penny for em.
I would honestly consider recommend why your considering upgrading everything so soon after purchasing. If you didnt like the specs you got, why not buy a better computer? |
