Resolution Question

I know the title of this post is an oxymoron.

I have a question. I just built a system with a EVGA 680i mother board and 8800GTS 640MB SuperClocked. It can deliver a resolution of 2,560 x 1600.

My monitor is a 22 inch Samsung 226BW which can display 2560 x 1600 and I am running Vista Home Premium. When I go into the display settings in Windows, the max resolution is 1680 x 1050.

What am I missing or not getting? Do I have to reinstall the drivers? If so the video card drivers or the monitor drivers. Thanks in advance for you advice.

Your flat screen monitor physically has 1680x1050 pixels. No more no less. Hence, this is the maximum - and only - resolution that is /actually/ supported. Lower ones will be extrapolated and scaled, higher ones are flat out pointless.

Doh!

I was looking at the wrong page when I typed the resolution of the monitor. What kind of monitor gives that kind of resolution? Was it pointless to get this video card and board for this monitor?

I was planning on getting an identical card next year but it looks like I may be buying a monitor instead.

2560x1600 is the native resolution of 30" panels, if I remember correctly. You need dual-link DVI for that - for up to 1920x1200, single-link is enough.

Well at least your new card is going to be fast with that monitor

You will need that GPU to get good framerates even with a 1600x1050 resolution in the newer games.

Playing games such as Cyrsis and Oblivion MAXED OUT at a 2,560 x 1600 wouldnt be possible even with the 8800series cards. The 8800Ultra even struggles with some games at 1920x1200.
