| 8800 GTS or 8800 GTX
Hi, I am new here, so thankyou for letting me post my question in this forum.
I know this question has been asked a million times before, but I was hoping for a more specific answer regarding my situation. I have been running a AMD Sempron 2500+ 1.7 GHz, 1GB Ram and an ATi x1600 512MB Pro graphics card for quite some time now. I am running windows Vista ultimate perfectly fine with ATi's new drivers and have had no conflicts. I am a gamer, and I was hoping for an upgrade soon. I've been shopping around looking for parts to replace my main gaming parts in my computer. I didn't want to go through the hassle to completely buy a new compter which means getting another moniter, keyboard, mouse, harddrives, etc. I've mostly been looking on Tigerdirect.ca for parts. Good prices. Anyway, I narrowed down my choices for upgrades: an AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 Dual Core, 2 GB of Corsair Dual Channel DDR2 800 MHZ, some mother board (didn't take to much time to choose one, as long as it had PCI-E and 4 ram slots and Socket AM2) but for a graphics card, I am torn apart from choosing to get a Nvidia 8800 GTS (640 MB) or a GTX (768MB). With a 150$ price difference, I am not sure. Is the extra money worth it. When I get this computer, I want to be able to play games such as Oblivion and COH, BioShock and AOE3 and even Crysis on high settings. I don't want to have to go back to choosing medicore settings anymore. What do you think? |

Welcome to TechIMO.
Its really depends on your budget.
Heres the benchmarks. You run multiple resolutions and games.
Also, be aware that the GTX will require more power than the GTS. Your looking at ATLEAST a Quality 450W with the GTS and ATLEAST a 500W for the GTX.
You may want to consider an Intel Core 2 Duo setup as well.
Heres some CPU Benchmarks.
Realize that Bigger and Better computer hardware comes out every year. The only way to keep up with HIGH settings in all the new games is to upgrade periodically.

Oh thanks alot. Those are some good charts. But yea, I really want to keep my budget around 1000$, but you are right. To keep up with the software means you have to keep up with all the latest hardware too. Its just an ongoing thing. If you buy that latest graphics card today, 4 months from now, there will be a new lineup and it just goes on and on. YOu'll never have the best I guess. Thats what makes it so hard to make or buy the ultimate computer. |

Keep in mind that Crysis is going to be a LOT more optimized than Oblivion and AoE. FarCry was optimized very well for it's time and this will have better graphics and be better optimized. It will probably look amazing on a 7900 GPU.
Also something that wasn't mentioned, if you are going over a resolution of around 1680x1050 getting a card with extra video ram is "supposed" to boost the frame rate. If you are playing a non-hd resolutions then stick with the lower video ram amounts. |

If you get an 8800, you need to realize you wont be able to play those games on max settings cuz yer processor will bog out. I thought that once too that I could just get a vid card to fix it but then my cpu couldnt handle all the nice flashy stff the vid card was putting out. Just food for thought |

Hi there, Welcome..
I just wanted to recommend a Intel Core 2 setup also. The Fx-62 is nice, but anything at the E6600 range or greater can easily smoke it. I have built a couple of systems with the fx-62 for friends, then a couple with the Intel chips. I really did like the Intel systems a little better.
But if your stuck on the Fx-62, I highly recommend this board. It's a great board with all the features you'll need. |

I second the C2D suggestion.

Just food for thought | the same thing happened to me with my leadtek 640m 8800gts. i had an e6300 and it just didn't seem to be enough for the higher settings. i bought an e6750 to compliment the card and i couldn't be happier. so yes, you have been warned. |

These cards, it won't easily fit into mini computers or some computer towers (unless you push really hard). It didn't fit in my other computer because it was just a little too big to fit in. The one that I have was a GTX. The power consumption also reaches a peak (not by far).
Over here, or at anywhere else in the world, GTX are more expensive than GTS. To finish, you should note that the price gap between these two graphic cards corresponds to its performance gap which means that the GeForce 8800 GTX is much faster than the GTS version.
With a GeForce 8800 GTX and a 24" 1920x1200 monitor, you will be able to enjoy all the graphic advancements currently available.
