XFX 8600GT 512MB GDDR3 or DDR2 ??

Gamers!
I was tired of waiting for the price of the killer 8800GTX to come down since a few months... I desperately needed a great card since i had some really good games to finish off... after some good advice from the forums here, i decided to wait for the 8800GT/GTX.... but meanwhile, i came accross a good deal for an 8600GT... I knew it was marginally lower in performance compared to the 7900GS.. but the fact that it could be overclocked to 1800MHz shaders tempted me to go for a temporary solution until i get a BIG card! This one definitely was worth the money... + its DX10

I got the XFX 512MB GT variant.... with the latest drivers she does an excellent job for most high end games without any signs of fatigue or heating!!

But today i came accross tomsharware.comstating "Beware of slower DDR2 versions of the 8600 GT! The GDDR3 versions are the recommended cards - DDR2 equipped 8600 GTs will be notably slower. The cheapest GDDR3 versions of the card we could find started at $105 online."

How do i know if mine is a GDDR3 ?? i need to find out where i put that box pack now! Else does it show in the device manager if it has GDDR3 ??

or is it that DDR2 exists only for 256MB card ???

Where did you purchase the card? Did you look on their web site?

the 8800GT comes really close to the 8800GTX in performance for so much less money. all unless your running it on a super big screen, in which case the fatter memory bus of the 8800GTX makes it a clear winner

Normally I ve seen that most of the xfx 8600tgt are equipped with gddr3 memory, I dont think its ddr2 , any who if u want a good card in the price range of 250 get the ati radeon hd 3870 its most likely to be faster than the 8600gt and a slightly slower than the 8800 gt

What is the part number from the sticker on the back of the video card itself?

I'm at office... once am back i'l check that out... is there a way to find out using the sl. number ?? it cost me around 120$. I had an option of 7800GT 256MB card for 150$... but then i wanted a dx10 card...

I have seen on some websites where they have listed GDDR3 & GDDR2.. i thought it was just a printing mistake!! But it was only yesterday that i realized it wasnt!

Here's the list of XFX's 8600GT series cards: XFX MODELS: GeForce™ 8600GT.

Even better. Here's a review from Madshrimps testing DDR2 and DDR3 8600GTs: Club 3D 8600 GT 512Mb DDR2 Video Card Review. As you can see from the tests, the DDR3 equipped Sparkle 8600GT is slightly faster than the Club 3D DDR2 counterpart. But it's not really that much to be concerned about.

Hey thanks for those comforting words! I almost fainted when i thought i paid the same price and got much lesser... But isnt that DDR3 card a 256MB one which has bettered the 512MB DDR2 ???? does the XFX/BFG card have any upper hand on performance/cooling/reliability front over sparkle,PNY or other cards of same spec ????

I have been playing DiRT with med specifications... running pretty decently.... but i'm still dreaming of the 8800GT

I'm seriously considering selling off the 8600GT as soon as i find 8800 in my pocket band
but i heard the 9800GTX is on its way ???
