Because spending $150 on a single 8800 GT is about as useful as flushing $150 down the toilet, especially since you already have a card that gives the same performance.
You can get 2 8800 GT's for less or 2 8800 GS's for less.

Too late, "new" card ordered... Open box from newegg, but for $129, not bad for a G92 based 8800GTS 512MB card, its ECS brand, but its still an nvidia product, have 15 days to refund it if not working, plus it was free 3 day shipping.
the one I grabbed, says original price was $149.99 but the other one just like it on there brand new is $200+ : Newegg.com - Open Box: ECS N8800GTS-512MX GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
here's the brand new non-open box one: Newegg.com - ECS N8800GTS-512MX GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
thinking the $149.99 may have been after some sort of rebate that has expired, have noticed that with some other products that were open box on there, selling for the after rebate price for open box... the one MSI 512MB 8800GT I found for $129 is an example, same model new was going for $149.99, but after rebate was $129.99.
anyways, G92 GTS is more or less the same as a G80 8800GTX as far as specs, minus the extra 256MB of memory & slightly reduced memory bus bandwidth/bit rate... so not a bad deal...
leaves open an extra PCIE slot for another if I want to add one later.
seems was only one in stock, just checked & after I ordered it was out of stock. normal price of that card was showing up at over $200.
once I get it, & double check to make sure its working right, I can sell the old G80 320MB GTS, & make some money back, overall it would be like spending well under $100 for that newer GTS.
doesn't really matter, contacted my brothers friend & a co-worker let them know the 320MB GTS & possibly the C2D E6400 will be up for sale soon, if they wanted to buy them. the money I make from those are going back into the PC anyways for additional parts.

I think you made a good move Shy. That's a steal of a price too.
What would be the point of getting a 256Mb 8800GT? I understand it's cheap, but at that point, he should just keep his current card. And a 8800GS? That's a little bit slower then his current card..
Anywho Shy, I think you made a good choice. And 2 of those cards haul ass in SLI. |

But do you really get a huge difference/gain in performance from 2x 8800 GTs?!?!?
I mean, you are still going to get 256MB of Ram even in SLI so that would mean that in higher resolutions the 8800gts would top it right?!? |

I am talking about 4-8x AA and 1680x1050 or 1920x1200. Otherwise the difference is 5-10%.
I was not able to find 256MB 8800 GT SLI benchmarks, but I could find 512MB 8800 GT SLI benchmarks and it showed between 40-70% performance increase in games that supported it at high resolution (in cases where the cpu was not limiting it). |

and in my case I do run most of my games, other than elder scrolls oblivion & one other, at 1600x1200, with 4x or 8x AA & 8x or 16x AF, if the games support it, HDR as well (some I will run at 1280x1024 to try to balance out settings at high, but slightly lower res to get decent frame rates. I do have a couple other games I haven't even installed yet, like Battlestations Midway & a couple others... which is why I'm so opposed to getting anything less that a 512MB card... my 320MB card is sort of limited at the higher resolutions I run at.
anyways, my brothers friend also got back to me, said he'd be interested in at least the video card, & possibly the CPU when the parts become available. he'll have to shell out another $50 for a mobo, $40-60 for a new PSU, & maybe another $40 for DDR2 (current system is a nforce 4 SLI mobo Socket 939 system I built for him, has like 1 or 2GB of DDR400 if I remember, & my old Venice 3000+ with the old 128MB Geforce 6600GT)... might even sell him one of the extra 80GB SATA drives I'll have. |
