| Samsung Syncmaster. Shouldn't it be operating as digital?
When I put my Powerbook (G5, OS 10.5) to sleep, the external display (Samsung Syncmaster 930b) goes dark except for showing a one-by-two box that blinks "Analog" then "Digital" several times at about one second intervals. When it wakes up or starts, it shows an unblinking "Analog" in the same box for a few seconds. I would think I should get a better presentation in "Digital," but I haven't been able to figure out how to switch it over. Any thoughts?

It would depend on your connection. If you have a DVI connection, then it is digital.
If you have VGA connector (15 pins, usually blue), then it is an analog connection.
I wonder why your monitor is switching. Perhaps you have an analog connection, but it natively runs Digital. |

That makes sense. There's a 15-pin connection at the monitor - with a Dvi at the laptop. An inline adapter connects them. I tweaked the picture while I was waiting for a response and it looks appreciably better. Multiplied thanks. RD |

the monitor wasn't cycling between Digital and Analog - I think it's a thing where it's just "advertising" it's capability.
Thanks again. |

These monitors do display what input they're trying.
With your analog connection (using the analog part of a DVI-I output on your computer), it's not really a surprise that it settles on "Analog".
Use a digital DVI-D cable, and it'll be digital - and the perfection you've been seeking will be inherent.
Don't let yourself get screwed over "high quality" cables. The cheapest one will do the job exactly as good - it's a digital signal. |

The monitor is actually switching back in forth between Digital and Analog when it detects no signal. The reason it switches back and forth is so that it will pickup any new signals that are plugged in either via DVI or VGA.
Mine usually turns completely off about about 20 seconds of not finding a signal.

Thanks, guys.
I bought and installed the DVI to DVI cable. Picture perfect. RD |
