| 9800 GTX+ Versus a Pentium D
Hey guys,
I knew that the geniuses here at TechIMO could help me with this
I'm planning on buying a 9800 GTX+ soon, and have...
Pentium D (Dual Core) 3.00 Ghz (per processor)
2 gigs of RAM
7900 GS (But imagine it's the 9800 for this case)
Dell Mobo
Someone said "You should be fine with the Crysis ultra high mod. Only thing I worry about is that your processor might bottleneck your graphics card. :x"
I know he's using a figure of speech when he says "bottleneck," but what does he mean by this? Thanks fellas.

Basically means you have hardware that's slowing down other hardware. In this example, your CPU will not be able to feed your GPU the info fast enough for the GPU's liking.
For example.
Your system might yield say 25 FPS in crysis with that current CPU. If you were to switch it out to something faster, you may get say 35 FPS in Crysis. |

Ahh, KarmaKiller!! Surely you remember me? You helped me in the Overclocking thread.
Thanks for the info bro, didn't know what he meant. I believe I meet the requirements, but I'll go double check.
Just got my payment, GONNA GO BUY IT SON!#!
Thanks |

Don't waste your money on that gpu...put it towards a better cpu...
A 7900gs is already high enough end for that pentium, sadly.
Trust me, even an old x800pro from 2004 was majorly bottlenecked by my old p4 2.8ghz.

Listen. I have been waiting a WEEK for this card and I JUST got my $200.... I MUST GET IT! I think it's fine, I've been all over YouTube and asked many, many people... This one guy, today, DID say that my processor MIGHT lack a bit. That's why I started this forum. But I've told others my specs and everything and it looks good to go. I'm about to turn off my PC and check what power supply I have atm (lol). See you guys in a bit. Thanks for your reply, too, Solo. I know what you're saying, and thanks, but do you think I'll be ok? So what, I may lose... 10 FPS? 25 is still good, so to speak. However, who said it'd be ONLY 25? But please reply and let me know what you think. Thanks everyone, and Solo. |

Very High Mod..
I doubt you'll even peak out at 25FPS. Probably more around 15 or so..
EDIT:
I guess it really depends on what res though. |

Thanks everyone, and Solo. | I'm not trying to be harsh, but you are going to be disappointed in the performance that it's going to give you in comparison to the performance it could give you in another rig. I speak from experience here....One high end part is nice and all to give an old rig some life, but in this case you are throwing away money....unless you plan to upgrade the rest very soon I would save your cash. The 7900gs is far from a bad card for your current system.
Like I said, if my old p4 2.8ghz bottlenecked an x800pro from 2004...what do you think that dual core p4 at only 200mhz faster per core is going to do to a MUCH, MUCH faster video card? |

Sorry fellas, JUST got my rig back together. Woot! I meet the system requirements!....
... At least from what IT says. Thanks Karma and Solo. My res will be 1680x1050, so only a 20", not 30". And this thing isn't quote "old," it was made back in '06. I found out it has 6 fans today :O I know that's not too much, but I thought it had like... 2. :P
I don't know what to think. Solo says don't do it. Some others on YouTube (I've asked a BUNCH) say you should be fine. TigerExpress have a 30 day guarantee thing or your money back, which is nice. I can test it. It measures out fine (literally, I had to measure), and my power supply is 200 watts over what's needed, 1 more gig of RAM that's needed (will be 2 over what's needed soon; it calls for 1 gig), got a PCI Express 2 slot (I think it's 2, since x16 means 2 right?), 6 prong thingamajig. My rig's an XPS 600, so yeah, it's a gaming rig. However, I know technology dramtically gets new every MONTH, even, so I know you guys might say, "Oh, your processor is a bit lacking. Upgrade." I'm only 14, though. I can't make meh money Just sold my Xbox 360 (I never, ever.... Ever use it) for $200, so now I can buy the GTX.
Is it REALLY that bad? If I stick with a 7900, I can only play Crysis on all low, or I can turn it down to 800x600 and play medium -_-
Whattt tooo dooo $200 wouldn't even cut it for the processor, nonetheless if I could even install it once I bought it. I'm not too familiar with processor installation :P |

I'm just suggesting you save your pennies for a new rig man.
I'm running a rig I built a few monthes back....all with hardware from 2005/2006 so it's not like I'm keeping up with todays power, either. However the 9800gtx is just too much card for your system..
I'm not saying it won't show a performance jump, it will, however it won't justify the 200 bucks spent on it.
You could actually get a decent AMD cpu and mobo combo for less than 200 bucks that would far out perform that Pentium-D. Then save up a hundred or so over time and slap in a better card, it will pay off in the end. Plus you can always sell old parts to recoup some of the money.
Oh and you will always be dissapointed with Crysis's performance...Even todays top rigs have a hard time playing it on high settings. |

| I am 14, remember? I know you read it :P I don't know the first place where I could sell these parts. You say your rig is built off of 05/06 parts, right? So is mine, as I'd mentioned. Again, as much as I wish I did (very!), I don't have the money for this crap. My parents won't pitch in a whopping $100 just for me to get a new card. |
