    400W FSP PSU and 8800GTS

I have a 400W FSP PSU with 16A and 18A on the 12V rails. I'm looking at a 8800GTS to stick in the box.
    MSI Computer Corp. - Product

It's an Asus 780G MB with one hard drive. Is this going to be a problem or should I shoot for a 3850 instead?

    GTS (G80) or GTS(g92)
I have a 350w FSP PSU. I've had 2x 8800gt's in there, with no issues. On a OC'd dual core/2gigs/1HDD/6 fans. I'm not saying I would recommend it, but more then likely your PSU is enough to run that setup.

It's hard to pass up the deal on the 8800GTS. $79 with free shipping. The only problem I see is that the 8800GTS OC is a 320Mb card and the 3850 is a 512M card.

the GTS is the older G80 card. Both cards are roughly in the same performance range.

looks like the only time the 3850 beats the GTS is in some 3DMark synthetic benchmarks and games optimized for ATI...

other than that, looks like the GTS beats it out most of the time & even by quite a margin in some games depending on the settings:

Tom's Hardware - Benchmark Oblivion: The Elder Scrolls 4 (Outdoor)

as to the PSU, should be ok, the 400W Silverstone I'm putting in my Brother's friends system to run MY old 320MB GTS has similar amps on 12V & is enough to do the job.

Here's another comparison with the 320M 8800GTS vs the 3850

Charts, benchmarks Gaming Graphics Charts Q3/2008, Call of Duty 4 v1.6[2080]=on&prod[2123]=on

Sometimes they are close and sometimes they are not. My son wants Call of Duty 4 and the HD3200 just won't do it very well.

Here's a question: the 3850 in the comparison is a 256M model but the one I am buying will be a 512M model. Any difference in performance between a 256M model and a 512M model?

Dang Newegg messed me up with this sweet deal

    Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GV-R467D3-512I Radeon HD 4670 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

    a 4670 for $76 with a $20 MIR and free shipping

The 512Mb 3850 will handle larger resolutions better then the 256. Other then that there is no difference.

I pulled the trigger on the 4670. It's a smaller card. The 8800GTS, 4670 and 3850 all ran about the same on tests. It's hard to pass up $56 for a card like that.
