the 250 is just barely faster then the 9800. And it's slightly cheaper where your at, no reason not to get it.

problem is, if they changed the mounting holes on the 250 from the GTX, if the waterblock will work on it.

Oh, I doubt that water block would work on it. But really IDK for sure.
I'd just sell the water block, and get your money back.

my second option would be to sell the waterblock for £45, making my total budget to around £170. this would mean that i could get a gtx260.

thats what i'd do honestly. GTX 260 should be quite a jump up from the GTS 250/9800GTX+.

I forget, is this in a SLI capable system?

otherwise if not, and it doesn't matter, maybe even see if you can find a Radeon 4850x2 in the GTX 260's range, some of them over here in the states are going for the $260 range. or at the very least a Radeon 4870 card, and maybe save some cash. some are going for the sub $200 range now.

but that increased budget increases your choices, GTX 260, Radeon 4870 (either of those will be close to the same in performance), stretch it a little more and a 4850x2.

im not really a fan of ati since all of the graphics cards i have owned with them always went wrong, my last one was a 4650 which went wrong after a few hours of use, with no overclocking or anything, apparently it had somehow overheated.
this are the option i have for a gtx260:
    EVGA GeForce GTX 260 896MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
    or
    EVGA GeForce GTX 260 896MB Superclocked Edition GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
    or
    Zotac GeForce GTX 260 "55nm Maxcore" 896MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (ZT-X26E3KA-FSP)

well, if it were me it'd come down to 2 of them, the evga Super clocked card, or the Zotac one that uses the newer smaller 55nm core...

Nvidia quietly switched over the 260's to 55nm when the 285 was released. to round out the new cards, with the GTS 150/250, & the GTX 285, so the middle highend was also 55nm.

but with evga's step up program, I'd check to see if that particular model is on their current accepted list, and if it is, maybe go for that one, the step up program lets you upgrade your current card if on the list, to a better one with in 90 days of purchase for the difference of what it would cost. comes in handy if a new series of cards is expected to be coming out with in that time period, or if you need something to hold you over till you get enough for a better card. but you can only apply with one card, so you can't use say a 9800GTX+ to step up to a GTX 260, then use that 260 to step up to a 285 & so forth, can only step up once per new purchase.

    EVGA | Support | Step-Up Program

otherwise the 55nm Zotac should run a bit cooler & lower on volts than the others, assuming their not 55nm cores?
