Exclamation Inspiron 530s Slimline graphics card [GAMING]

    BEST/NEWEST Slimline Graphics card

So far using an "ATI Radeon 2400 HD Pro"
    Windows Vista Home Premium, 32bit, 2 cpu's @ 3.00ghz ea & 3gb ram
x16 PCI Express 1.0 (2.0 have backwards compatibility with about only 3% performance loss, hardly noticeable)

    Games I play:
    CoD 4 High settings.
***Soon to get CoD 6, MW 2
    Crysis Warhead
    Crysis Wars
    AoE III
    Red Alert 3
    *Might get- Demigod.

    (MMORPG/RPG/FPS) Etc.

I know a slim line PC isn't the best for gaming, but please...bought this PC a year ago, and back then I knew nothing about computers and now I do and now I've become more of a serious gamer...(Now that I know enough about PCs, I'll build my next one but I'll have to stick to this one for a while...a couple of years x_X)

    Thanks

The pc has about a 330watt power supply that will drastically limit what card you can purchase...

Think my 330 watt would do that?....(Just as long as I don't pressure the gfx card on too much load)

    Edit.
Including that's it's a 2.0 card on a 1.0, that should make the power even more less so the 330 should handle 350 which would be drawn down further

You cant really change how much load you will be putting on the graphics It will run the game as fast as it can regardless o what your playing. (Not to mention two of the games you want to play are pretty much the most demanding around)

Also I dont think a 9600 could max out the bandwidth of a pci-e x16 1.0 so that would make no difference (I could be wrong)

As to fact of it working, I wouldnt risk it (doubt there is enough amps on +12v). Your better off to sell what you have now and build your own.

    9600 requires 350watts on a 26amp +12v rail.

rather interesting my 9600GT requieres a 400watt psu. Might be manufacteror difference though mines Zotac.

Does your PSU have dual 12v+ rails? If so, it can probably handle that card, but your gonna be close to maxing out the PSU.
If not, then it WILL NOT handle that card. Your really need to upgrade your PSU first before you try to install a new GPU.
    EDIT:
On second thought, 330w PSU? I wouldn't do it. That just way to close to absolute max. And normally, most "generic" PSU's can't actually put out the full load they say they can.
I'd probably upgrade the PSU first before anything.

If it's a "slim" tower, that PSU won't fit.

ah you have a point. Well if it is a slim tower then you can't find much of anything that will fit unless you want to cut and drill into the tower untill it fits.

If I was to 'cut and drill', how would you suggest that for the graphics card part?

I'll see what I can do on the psu part.

the PSU part is easy. all you have to do is drill some carefully measured holes and your pretty much done.

now as for the graphics card part what would be in the way?

The top of the case that slides off so that you can deal with the hardware, the graphic card sticks out an inch over the case line (for a normal gfx card).

And so, the monitor plug-in is also obstructed by the case line where the graphic card holds onto after being clicked into the mobo.

if you could take a pic with the cover off I could help a little better cause from what I can see all I can tell you is your computer is a dell and the optical drives are on the right side.

I asked about video cards for my Dell 530:

    2400Pro - 9w
    2600XT - 49w

8600GT is probably where I would land without changing the ps.
I went with the 8600GT and all is well.

    Mine's a Dell 530 S (S = SLIMLINE)
    530 = Mid sized case.

In dells defence (although they do proberly deserve to be shot).

That computer was intended to be used in a 'small' office or home enviroment with the ability to surf the net and do word documents and mabye other simplistic tasks.

They do sell higher spec models with a slightly more ability to upgrade but for those who dont they make something like what you are suffering with....

-points the shotgun at my brother- he's the one who bought it, never asked me what I planned to do with the comp or my usages, in fact, I knew nothing about comps then. Now that I do, I'll build my next one, but for now, I'm stuck to this computer for a few more years until this computer becomes slow, crap & I got enough money for another.

I've now re posted in that "Why I can't get another case" thread on Dell's community, I'll see if the motherboard etc can fit a DELL 530 mid tower.

I've read that the exact same model on my motherboard is used in mid towers too, not just the slimline. I'll see what I can come up with, once I get another reply. (re bumps my case post for the 2nd time on the dell forum)
