| Ati x1300 512mb Graphics card
Hi,
I have been sold a laptop with a ATI x1300 graphics card, the guy ran dxdiag to show me it is 512mb graphics, so I bought it, now I read up a bit more about the card and everywhere I read it says it is a 128mb graphics card.
Why does it show on my system as 512mb if it is only 128....have I been screwed? |

Chances are it has 128mb on the card and is using 384mb of the system memory. I wouldnt really say you have been ripped off, even if the x1300 had 512mb of memory it could'nt make use of it. 128mb is perfectly fine for that card. Out of curiosity what is the make and model of the laptop?

I suggest you go into your system BIOS and take away that extra 384mb that your card is using. As Aaron said, your card is not going to get possibly near to using all that ram, its a marketing gimmick to make you think your card is faster than it is. Worse still, its robbing your main system of 384mb, so your system is actually slowed down (which is why you should turn it off).

Thanks for the replies, it is a HP nc6400 laptop. I paid $700 for it.
Core 2 Duo 2Ghz T7200 processor
1Gig Ram
100gig hd
and according to the seller 512mb graphics card.
.............to boot there is 1 red dot on the screen that I didn't notice when I bought it.......
Btw,
When you say it can't use the extra 384mb why is there an option to use it then? Can it not utilize it?
I feel so ripped....

Yes $700 is way overpriced.
Also been searching around on google and the only ones I have found have intel intergrated gpu's with 128mb of memory. Quote:
When you say it can't use the extra 384mb why is there an option to use it then? Can it not utilize it? | The card is a low end gpu, and it cannot utilise 512mb of memory, it will proberly struggle to use 256mb.... As 'PMF' said its a gimmick they use as the average user will deam 'more memory as better'.
e.g.
an 8800 GTS 320mb will perform much much better than a 9400 Gt 1gb.

just because its 512mb doesn't mean its good. I've seen 1gb ones that are worse than my 256mb card. Edit: Beat me to it haha!
Next time ask here or research it prior to purchase.
