Excuse my ignorance but, how do you change out the GPU on a laptop? Isn't it hardwired in?

Hmm, for some reason when I answered this I thought it was in the mobility section. Anyways, an AGP card has to be used on a MB with an AGP slot it's not compatible with any MB without one.
onboard ----> no slot
PCI card ----> PCI slot
AGP card ----> AGP slot
PCI-E card ----> PCI-E slot
There are no backward or forward slot compatibility on GPU's. It either fits the slot or it doesn't work.

It does not matter what the core speeds, memory type/speeds etc.... as long as the card will fit the slot it will work (not bringing into power issues etc).

Aaron your are right, I did misunderstand. After reading your interpretation, It was clearer what was being asked.
The only issue I can think of would be the voltage of the said slot. Older card/slot were 3.3 volts (really old 2x and lower AGP slots ) and won't run on newer boards, newer cards/slots have 1.5 or .8 volts.
