After trying everything to make games work with my HD4870 and Hiper 580W Type-M, I'm giving up and getting a new PSU.
Has anyone got a 450W Corsair VX or HX running with a 4870?
I've normally got an O/C'd E6750 @ 3.4ghz at 1.44v (voltage could probably got a bit lower) with 2 SATA HD's, 1 IDE HD and an IDE DVD/RW with an Antec900 case and it's fans.
I'd like to get the 550W VX, but it's so hard to find for under, or even near £60. Also, if it would work with a 450W VX/HX, would it still be able to run it after a couple of years?
Oh yeah, nearly forgot the original question, is the only difference between the VX and HX the fact that HX is modular?

Either or which will be more then enough for system. In fact, I can't believe the 580w Hyper isn't enough. That's odd for sure..
Anywho, I'm pretty sure you can pull more amps off the 12v+ rail on the VX, beings it's just one large single rail.
But if you feel the modular PSU is for you, then pick it up. Either of them will power your system fine. |

The HX is a single 12v+ rail too.
The Hiper is basically a 450W with 30A on dual 12v rails, because there is way too much power going to the 3v and 5v, because it's based on an older design.
So the HX/VX is 396W over a single 12v Rail, and the Hiper is 360W over 2x12v rails.
But that's what makes me worried that the HX/VX won't be able to handle it. The Hiper is over 2 years old, so will have lost some of its power, but that makes me worry that the Corsairs could be fine at first, but then not work a couple of years later.
Although thinking about it, the single rail could change things. As far as I know, 12v+2 on my Hiper is dedicated to the CPU, and 12v+1 is for everything else, so the 12v+1 is being stretched. So would things even out if it was all coming from the one rail? |

There will never be just one rail dedicated to the CPU if you have a multi rail PSU. That's not really the way it works.
And I guess I'm confused as to which 2 units your talking about. I know about the 550VX, but the closest thing to the HX I can find in the 500watt area is the 520HX, which has multi rails. Are you talking about a different model?
Either way, your GPU won't pull anything more then 300watts, even if overclocked. So either PSU should be more then enough for your system.
In fact, on my system, I'm running a overclocked Q6600, 780i board, lots of fans, 4 HDD's, a 9800gx2 (which is 2x 9800gtx's on one card) and I even had my water setup hooked up to this, and I'm only running a 600watt OCZ stealthxstream. I've also had 2 other 8800gt's hooked up to this, and it still ran.
Most of the PSU's out are today are way overpowered for the systems people use them on. Which is funny to me, because the general trend of hardware is to use less and less power with every new release, but yet the PSU manufactures are going the opposite way.
EDIT:
I now see you were talking about the 450hx.. It all makes sense to me now.. lol |
