Wow I wouldn't match a high end cpu with such a low end gpu talk about a total waste of money!!

Um, why would you pair an i7 975 with a piece of junk 9400GT?
Dang, Rich beat me to the punch! Silly ninja...

An Intel i7 920 paired with an ATI HD5870 would be a much better match of hardware, IMO.

I was going to add something along those lines but never got it typed in.
If you've already got the 975 and are looking for a good card, don't waste your money on the 9400 buy something mid range at least. That card is pretty low end by today's standards.
If you don't have either one and are looking to build, don't waste your money on either of them. The 975 is a screamer of a chip but TBH the price/performance ratio is way off. As JLK said you can get better performance for your buck out of a cheaper chip and better gpu. |

oh come on guys, its not that bad, I mean I was thinking about running my i7 920 with my PCI S3 Trio 64 (64-bit capable Quad core with HT, 64-bit Windows 7, and 64-bit Video card, Perfect match, don't you think), and run some newer games at 1080 resolution with 8x AA and everything on high.
Can't wait to drop in the Core i9 6 Core CPU when that comes out, that should give a nice boost to the system for gaming, hell even thinking of throwing in my PCI TNT 2 card for a bit of a boost too...
Seriously though, as the others have said, why would you pair it, i7 975 Extreme with a low end Sub $50 9400GT... especially for gaming, I mean if your willing to throw down $1000 for a top end CPU, for gaming, you better have enough common sense to throw in AT LEAST a $100 Video card, if not closer to $200, otherwise there's really no point to spending a grand on a CPU.
If your LOOKING at a System/PC with this sort of configuration, forget about it, find one with at least a Geforce GT220 or Geforce 9600 series or higher in it. or for ATI, one with a Radeon 4670 or higher card in it.
even if it has the base i7 920 with an X58 Chipset Motherboard (CPU Socket 1366), or even an i5 750 or i7 860 with a P55 Chipset motherboard (CPU socket 1156), coupled with one of those cards, or even a top end card (Geforce GTX 285, 295, Radeon 4890, 4870x2, 5850 or 5870), they'll handle it fine. a system like that would be much better suited for gaming.
for the games you listed though, an i7 975 is WAY beyond what is even really needed for them, at least in price anyways, an i7 920 with a decent gaming card is a good start.

Is this an already built system or something you are trying to put together??
TBH it's a common sense thing, for what you are spening on the cpu alone you can get a great cpu and an awesome gpu and annihilate the 975 and 9500, 9400 or the 8600. Why on earth are you spending $1k on a cpu and only want to spend $50-75 on a gpu if you game at all does that make sense to you? |

Any Card in this search list will be a bottom level to top end video card, anything less than these, are really not intended for gaming, some might be light gaming cards, but all of these would be the lowest and to top end for Gaming that I would recommend, all are PCI Express x16 or current PCI Express 2.0 x16 bandwidth cards. Newegg.com - Radeon HD 5750, Radeon HD 5770, Radeon HD 5870, Radeon HD 5850, GeForce GT 220, Radeon HD 4770, GeForce GTX 275, Radeon HD 4890, GeForc... |
