Exclamation NO Frame-rate Limiter - my card is burning!!!

I have a GE Force 9800 GT video card and in one of my games there is no frame-rate limiter. So what you ask? WELL that means that my card is approaching 200 FPS and I'm worried that my card is not going to last long with that kindof a load.

    Any Ideas ???

You have nothing to worry about.... Only reason there are frame limiters is to stop screen tearing and that most monitors can only disply 60-85hz

its doing 200fps because its capable of it in that game, its not like the game is holding a gun to the cards head and telling it to do 200fps (when it can only do 100fps) or it'll blow its brains out.

dude, WTH, what do you expect, Its sim city, you could probably get great frame rates with some of the lowest current cards on the market, what do you think a 9800GT is going to do, its a lower mid range card.

what we are saying is its not going to harm the card at all doing 200fps, if its such a big deal then force Vsync on in the Nvidia drivers, that should limit the frame rate to whatever the refresh rate is for your video card.

either way its not going to burn out the card.

Wow take things too seriously.... Have you not heard of google?

I thought it was common knowledge an old game will run better than a new one?

Should we refund his membership fee here so he can buy a low end card

Don't like the honest and serious answers, don't ask the questions then.

yes some of the response were in jest, but there was truth in what we were saying, had you actually read what we said and gotten around some of the joking.

Hell, my first post was more or less an analogy so to speak, I figured they would of understood what I was saying, but apparently not.

my 2nd post was to point out your going to get ridiculous frame rates on an old game like that anyways with a more current mid range card its more or less common sense for anyone with any decent GPU knowledge.

try running Quake 3 with no frame rate limit and you'll see what I'm talking about.

I tried something like that on an old game years ago running my 7800GT or 8800GTS 320MB I forget which, but achieved nearly 900+ Frames per second in the game based on its framerate counter.

also explains why games like COD 4 gets well over 100fps on many top end cards now, the cards are more power than that game needs, in this case, its the same thing for Sim City, even if it was Sim City Societies the most recent one for PC, it would probably be more power than is needed to run the game.

but like I said, look in the video drivers and force Vsync on, it should at least limit the framerate to some degree. but with all that said the extra frames WILL NOT, over burden your card to the point it dies prematurely, the only thing doing that will be heat, or too much power as in a power surge, or possibly a short of an individual component on the card dying to soon like capacitors, etc.

"That kind of a load" - The thing is that to the 9800GT there is practically no load running Sim City.

Without going into depth about your clear lack of underdstanding of the situation, consider the following:

Would Nvidia allow old games (or any games) to shorten the lifespan of their hardware?

    The answer is no.
Nvidia are not perfect, no company are, but i am certain that they wouldn't allow old games to shorten the lifespan of their graphics cards.

I'm living proof i still play Red Alert 2 all the and the frame rate i get out of my 8800gt must be higher than 200 FPS at least.

There is no issue here play Sim City in the sound knowledge of this fact.

No, i think a better solution would be to keep the membership, he clearly needs it, and underclock the card every time he plays Sim City to prevent "Teh overloads". Oh and maybe lay off the overeaction/mardy tablets a little...
