| nVIDIA GTX 260 vs ATI 5770
i M going to buy a new PC in few days.
But i m not able to decide as on which GRAPHIC CARD to buy.
i Have 2 choices : 1} ATI RADEON HD 5770
2} nVIDIA GTX 260.
Pls. dont give me any other choice as i have decided to buy any one of these cards.
i Dont want a huge gaming rig.
i want it for all round purposes & mainly for 3D ANIMATION & VIDEO ENCODING.
& might play few games as well such as BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM, GTA IV, ASSASSINS CREED.
Both cards have their advantages & disadvantages.
ATI 5770 has DX-11 SUPPORT, EYEFINITY, etc BUT IS SLOWER THEN GTX 260 ON GAMES. WHEREAS
nVIDIA GTX 260 lacks DX-11 SUPPORT but is faster then ATI 5770.
nVIDIA HAS CUDA & PHSYx which is a BOON TO GAMING & ANIMATION.
i Dont think ATI has such technologies with them.
By viewing the following images i have decided that GTX 260 is slower then ATI 5770 :
So PlS. reply |

Well the first chart has nothing to do with speed.
Really it would more of a tie but the 5770 would be the better card since it has directx 11 and the 260 doesn't. Plus I think the 5770 is the cheaper card than the 260 atm (not dsure haven't checked prices for a while.

If you encode video, then I think the nvidia card would pay off in the end. Using CUDA to encode is WAY faster then any CPU encoding there is. So if that's one of the things your do, I'd mark a "+" in the nvidia column.
DX11 is nice, but hardly any games take advantage of that now. Hell, very few games actually take advantage of DX10 which has been around a couple years now, if that tells you anything. I wouldn't really consider that honestly, but that's just me.
5770 scales better in Crossfire then what the 260's do in SLI, so if you think you might run multiple cards in the future, I'd go for the ATI card.
Honestly, I just made the same decision, but I went with a 260. I think CUDA/Physx will come in handy, and from the "real world" benchs I've been reading, the 5770 is in fact slower in most games then the 260.
My new 260 should be here today!! |

IMO, the 260 would be the better buy. But I've been known to be a Nvidia guy also. |

Well looking at your charts the 260 consumes more power and beats the 5770 in 2 out of 3 games. Also has better performance in that other chart....
I had two 260's they are great cards and can be picked up cheaper than the 5770... (just make sure you get the 216 SP version, not the 192).

one has 216 Stream processors, the older one has 192.
more SP's = More Performance.

Do you even know if your encoding software supports Cuda (most don't)? If it doesn't there is no reason to buy an nVidia card for that.
With DX11 it's possible we'll see more encoders supporting the new GPGPU features which would mean it could use the 5770 for encoding and the CPU.
