PLEASE help! Graphics card issue or PSU issue?
Hey,
So...one problem at a time, I'm getting closer to getting this graphics card up and running. I am trying to get a used Nvidia Geforce 285 GTX up and running. Got it intalled. Got the driver installed. Bought a new power supply for it. I'm getting a message at the beginning of windows start up that says that the card is not recieving suficient power, and that the settings will be lower on the card to allow it to run. Games and stuff run like crap with it's "adjusted" settings.
So...here we go. I'm lost again. I have a Antec 750 W PSU model EA-750.
Specs are as follows
+5v= 25A max
+3.3V=25A max
ALL +12v (1-4)= 25 max each
-12v=0.5A max
+5vsb= 3A Max
It says undernieth the chart
+12v1, +12v2,+12v3,+12v4 max load = 56A
Is the power supply not enough or is the card not doing its job?Last edited by KevinsHope; May 6th, 2010 at 06:02 PM.

do you have both the 6 pin PCIE power connectors from the Power supply plugged into the Video card?

Thanks for your response, ShyguyXPC.
This card has a six pin and an 8 pin jack side by side. I had both the pcie 6 pin and the pcie 8 pin plugged in. There is another 8 pin jack that says p4 on it. At one point, I tried hooking it up along with the 6 pin PCIe, but the card won't run with that 8 pin p3 plugged in. I was thinking it might be the 56A limmit the power supply has. I also have two DVD roms and two hard drives running on the 12v railing, along with 5 different cooling fans. I have no idea how much any of those use in Amps, but maybe their combined usage is more than the graphics card leaves available. I read that the graphics card uses 47A, so that doesn't leave much breathing room if I am understanding it all correctly. Is this the issue, Maybe? What do you all think?Last edited by KevinsHope; May 7th, 2010 at 09:57 AM.

Try reseating your 6 & 8 pin PCIe plugs in the card again. Double check that the 8 pin is for PCIe and not one of the "P4" CPU plugs.

I'm not sure where you got 47 amps.
The tests I found show total system as
257w
305w
381w
385w
Lets take the 385 Watt total system.
If that was all 12v (and it isn't) total 12v would be 32amps
That power supply should be way more than enough even for dual cards .Last edited by stroyal; May 6th, 2010 at 11:20 PM.

Well if your running near max for you PSU with that system configuration, then I must be pushing my PSU to its limit (read in my first post, my sig, has all of my hardware for my main rig, and I'm running on a Corsair 750W PSU with 60A Total Single 12V Rail...)
Seriously though, your not hitting ANYWHERE near the max for your PSU with what your saying for hardware components.
like JLK said, make sure your not using the 8 (or sometimes its a 4x4) plug thats intended for the CPU.
Looking up your PSU, you should have two 6 pin and two 6+2 Pin plugs for PCIE.
the 6+2 is the same as a 8 pin PCIE, just allows you to use 4x 6 pin if necessary.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

Well...obviously, what I heard with the 47A was wrong. Sorry for that. However, I am certain that I used the PCIe 6+2 pin and a 6 pin PCIe in connection with the card. I tried using one off of each cord and running the GPU off of one cord. It is good to hear that the power supply should be sufficient. So what does it mean that the well connected PCIe 6+2 pin and the 6 pin PCIe did not provide the power that the GPU requires. Are you guys thinking the GPU is bad?

sounds that way...what is the "actual" brand of this nvidea card ... (example) eVga, XFX, etc etc ... or is it a straight up nVidea card ...?
If the PSU is new .... have you tried only powering up 1 hard drive the motherboard, and the card to see if it boots correctly .. I would recheck all pins on the card.. and the female part of the plugs from the psu ... make sure when you push the plugs in, it's not pushing some of the wires out of the (psu plug) ...

Yeah...tried that. No dice. I got a psu with a singly 12v thread that maxed at 76A....still no dice...and then...to top it all off....I discovered in Direct X that it is a gtx 280...not a gtx 285, though it was advertised as a 285, which would be irritating but exceptable if it worked right. But it doesn't work right, so I'll be asking Ebay to return my money, and they can chase down the jerk wad that sold this to me. I'm going to push to have his or her account suspended...I'm so ticked. This seller sells a lot of PC stuff on Ebay. For any of you out there that are ebayers, I think her name is Sarah Barnes and she goes by the handle sbar6556, at least unitl they suspend her account and she has to invent a new alias. If you know her, be sure to send her a nasty virus for me!
