Graphics cards the system can use?

I don't really understand anything about technology... My girlfriend is trying to play a game but it can't run on her computer. We're trying to get her a new graphics card, but since we're only 16, don't have a lot of money to waste. So I don't want to get something and realize "Aww! It doesn't work!"

I've used every resource at my disposal (that I know of) so I decided to turn to tech people.

I don't know what information is helpful, so I'll just include as much as possible. (this is all directly from the dxdiag thing she sent me).

She has a Dell computer. It's a desktop. I don't know how to find the model number and stuff.... It runs Windows Vista™ Home Basic (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2. It's a Vostro 200(?). Under "Processor" it says- Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz. I don't know what any of that means.... It has 2036MB of memory.

I'll copy the information on her current graphics card from her dxdiag-
    ---------------
    Display Devices
    ---------------
Card name: Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family
    Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
    Chip type: Intel(R) GMA 3100
    DAC type: Internal
    Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_29C2&SUBSYS_02381028&REV_02
    Display Memory: 287 MB
    Dedicated Memory: 0 MB
    Shared Memory: 287 MB
    Current Mode: 1024 x 768 (32 bit) (60Hz)
    Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor
    Driver Name: igdumd32.dll
    Driver Version: 7.14.0010.1322 (English)
    DDI Version: 9Ex
    BGRA Supported: Yes
    Driver Attributes: Final Retail
    Driver Date/Size: 9/25/2007 04:45:52, 2494464 bytes
    WHQL Logo'd: Yes
    WHQL Date Stamp:
    Device Identifier: {D7B78E66-6A82-11CF-B276-3222A3C2CA35}
    Vendor ID: 0x8086
    Device ID: 0x29C2
    SubSys ID: 0x02381028
    Revision ID: 0x0002
    Revision ID: 0x0002
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have no idea what any of that means.
I googled the chip name and it was talking about PCI and PCI Express and stuff.... From what I've gathered, if it's express you can't replace it?

The game she's trying to play gives these requirements-
"Operating System: Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz or equivalent
    RAM: 512MB
    Required hard disk space: 5.2GB
Graphics card: DirectX 9.0c compatible with 128 MB RAM, Pixel Shader 2.0"

And this was from their forum-
"Direct X 9 compatible Graphic Card w/128mb Memory Nvidia Geforce FX 5700, **ATi Radeon 9600 (someone confirmed running it at minimum settings on an ATI Radeon 9550 SE)"

Could her computer use any of those cards? Or anything better? Preferably somewhat cheap? I know newegg has a lot of good deals, which would work, but if there was something at best buy that'd be great. (christmas gift cards going to waste...)

I don't know what other information you'd need, but if I'm missing something please tell me

    Thank you!!!

    Firstly welcome.

If in doubt its always a good idea to source information...

We need to know if it is the slim or mini tower. (slim is thin compared to a standard computer case).

They both have a PCI-E slot which is good, means it will support modern and better still, cheaper graphics cards.

We need to know info about the PSU, which will require you to remove the side panel from the case and read the label on the power supply.

    What is the game?

    What is the budget?

I'll be going to her house at about 3:30, so I'll be able to tell you whether its the slim or mini (although i think it's the mini) and the PSU thing. Will the label be somewhat easy to find? Or would it require some computer skill? Haha, she's nervous about letting me tinker with it.
As for the game and the budget though, the game is the mmo Runes of Magic, and the budget depends on where we buy the card. If it's over the internet, the maximum price would be about $40-$50. If its at best buy which would be preferable, it'd be (counting the gift cards) about $80. Which I know is hard to come by :P
    And once again, thank you.
Edit: Actually, it might be the slim. Her dxdiag says the processor is Intel Pentium, and according to Dells website the mini comes with Intel Celeron.

That is a Vostro 200 SLIM.

The PSU label is the white one on the bottom left hand side.

I can only make out its a 'Bestec' PSU but I need all those numbers including: Model, total output, +12v amps...

Although most people here hate 'best buy' (they don't have any in the UK), using those vouchers would probably be a good idea. I will look at their site and see if there is anything suitable.

    No worries.

Well 'Worst Buy' charges wayyyy too much...

    These are reasonable...

    (if mini tower).

    XFX - ATI Radeon HD 4670 1GB DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 Graphics Card - HD-467X-ZDF2

    (if slim or mini tower).

    Sapphire - ATI Radeon HD 4550 512MB DDR3 PCI Express Graphics Card - 100252hdmi

Edit:- For comparison here is a 4670 from Newegg....

    Newegg.com - XFX HD-467X-ZNL2 Radeon HD 4670 1GB 128-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Low Profile Video Card

Only $49.99 It will also fit in the slim tower.

Would the HD 4670 not work on the slim? She's fairly certain she has that one.
My girlfriend thinks you're awesome by the way. Haha xD

The top one wont as it is a standard profile card. The slim case requires a low-profile card. The bottom two I listed come with low-profile brackets.

We're gonna double check that she has the slim and then order the sapphire I think I'll be fine installing it.
Thank you SOOOOOOO much! I've been raging across the internet for days trying to find an answer!

No problem, did you manage to get the PSU information? Need to make sure that card will run okay in that system.

If its not in stock or for some reason you need a different card, check here first.

Let us know how it goes.

Was hoping for a bit more amps on the +12v...

With 17A I would suggest getting the 4550 (second link)... It does not take much power so it should be okay...

Yes, I believe you would have to swap the bracket for the included low-profile one. Then uninstall all the old video drivers, run a driver cleaner, then insert the new card and download the latest drivers from AMD's site.

Since your PC is using onboard video, there is no need to uninstall the old drivers, often they are simply part of the chipset drivers anyway...
All you really need to do is install the card, and download and install the drivers from the AMD website...
You don't want to use the drivers included on the CD that comes with the card, because they are often months old and need updating anyway...

    Ok, so
    1. Get the card.
    2. Put the card in the computer.
    3. Start the computer.
    4. Go to AMD's website.
    5. Download the newest drivers.

    And then I'm done?

Edit: Upon checking the website, I can't find the Sapphire anywhere. At least not the driver download.
Or are the three on that link for all the Radeon cards?

Yes its basically a generic driver covering all current gen cards...
you can choose just the basic driver or the full Catalyst package.
