Low Profile Graphics Cards?
Hello All,
Thanks for reading my post.
I have just acquired a new Acer x3990 off of ebuyer: here is the product link: Acer Aspire X3990 Desktop - Desktops | Ebuyer.com .
I need to get a graphics card for it but am totally bamboozled! It is one of the small cases and the card slot is about 7cm wide.Cannot seem to find one. Can anybody help suggest to me what i need? Ideally a 1 gb card would be good - like to play most modern games.
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions you might be able to give me.
Cheers
Danny

Welcome to TechIMO!
This says, it only has a 220watt power supply.
Acer Support: Specifications
Any graphics card upgrade will need at least a 350watt, but a real upgrade will need at least a 400watt power supply.
That will cost about $50 or 32 quid.
So considering that, what is your budget?
What games do you actually play?
A picture of the inside of the case will help a lot, as low profile cases, are terrible for upgrading, but most low profile cards should fit.
It is going to limit your choice though.
Not sure what you mean by 7 cm wide though, length is more important, as small case usually means Low Profile Card ,and I don't know of any low profile cards that are more than 1 slot wide.
Again pictures will help.
Cooling usually sucks on those small manufacturer cases.
If you want a video card upgrade that will do that i7 justice, you will probably need a new case.
I've only seen a picture of the outside, so I am just guessing, about the case.
Please confirm the power supply specs also.Last edited by stroyal; January 24th, 2012 at 02:14 AM.

This is the best low profile I can find on the sight, most of us buy from.
400watt power supply needed.
Newegg.com - HIS H667FN1G Radeon HD 6670 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card
I'm guessing you are in GB, and our GB members, and some of out US members will know sights there.
I'll check back in the morning.Hard Sayin Not Knowin

well, the site they bought the PC from is one of the ones we usually list for UK buyers as well.
Along with these others.

If it wasn't for the Low profile slim case with that system, PSU and GPU upgrade choices would be much much better.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

A solution
I know this is an old thread but this might help those who had the same problem as me.
I put in a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD5450 into my Acer Aspire x3990. It is fanless so it doesn't take up much power and it doesn't overheat, tho I left the side of the case of for extra ventilation just in case.
Not had any power problems despite the 220Watt power supply and I have just finished Deus Ex: Human Revolution with this setup.
As I bought the card for about 20 quid I am pritty content.
This works for me. =)
Hope this helps.

Do this 400 watt requirements assume that a lot of other componants will be supported bythe 12V rail(s)?
If not a lot of other drags, might a weaker PSU suffice?
Many of the mini-case computers with microATX Psus don't put out a lot of power, or at least, theur stated specs are low.
I also noticed, back when I upgraded OEM machines that the power supplies seem to understate their power and I wondered if this was done to discourage people from buying a cheaper model computer and then installing upgraded parts. Also, to discourage warrentee calls by maintaining a good headroom for the PSU which did not have the best voltage regulation or cooling.
