    Graphics Upgrade Issue

    Morning,

I had upgraded from an EVGA 550Ti 2048GB Card to a Elite Group 580 1536 Card. I feel like my comp is running slower. IE Mass Effect 3 with my 550Ti gives me a millisecond to check my loading screens. The 580 gives me a good 5 to 10 seconds for the loading screen. I've heard that the 580 is good with graphics, but is the 550 Ti better with speed due to the 2GBs of memory? I run on 16GB corsair ram on both, fyi.

Thanks and any input on a solution is good.

Loading screens usually have more to do with the CPU and RAM, and Hard drive, than the GPU.

500MB less in Video memory is not going to make that much of a difference, especially in ME3,

even more so when the the GTX 580 is more than twice as powerful and able to feed its data to and from its memory faster than the GTX 550 Ti.

Here you can see the 580 vs 550 Ti memory Bandwidth, nearly double what the 550 can do: Video Card Comparison - GPUReview.com

so I'd say your choke point is somewhere with the CPU, RAM, Hard drive, or software related.

Assuming this is a gaming PC, not sure why your running 16GB of RAM as its wasted on most PC's run for Gaming, even 8GB is overkill, unless maybe your running a RAM Disk or something else like that.

"I've heard that the 580 is good with graphics, but is the 550 Ti better with speed due to the 2GBs of memory?"

as my link above points out, No.

The 580 is faster regardless, the amount of memory has nothing or very little to do with speed, as a lot more to do with caching of large texture data and not waiting on the CPU to shuffle it along from the Hard drive and system RAM to the video card, its basically a super sized Buffer like you have on a hard drive, or CPU, with Cache memory.

but like I mentioned the 500MB difference won't impact things that much, not when comparing 2 cards like these where one is clearly twice the performance of the other.

Did you completely uninstall your old Video Drivers, and reinstall with the newest latest ones?

maybe need to use a Driver cleaner program and remove all the bits of old Nvidia drivers and do a complete new reinstall of drivers.

forgot to mention, the sheer fact that the 580 is twice the 550 in performance, I'm going to assume your running the game at higher settings and increase eye candy which could account for the longer load times loading up higher detailed and resolution images and other data as well.

I've ran it at the same level of settings for both cards. I'll try having the drivers cleaned and reinstalled. I'm only running it on 1600, by 900 so I'm not sure if the resolution may be an issue.

Concentrating on the problems however, I run on a i5 Quad 3.3 (3.7 Turbo) 16GB Corsair 1600Mhz 4 by 4. Once I have drivers cleaned and installed, I'll post about the situation.
