    Replace non working graphic card

Hi I have a Compaq presario 2020nx it has a non working on built in Nvidia GeForce 6150. The
power supply is only 250w. I have a new Ultra V-Series 500watt atx power supply to replace the current 250ps. I would like to replace the card with a GeForce 8400 GS Video Card . I am running Windows xp. Is this a good combination or should I buy a better card than the GeForce 8400.

I'm short on time so I can't look up the info for you, however you can do it. If you check the HP/Compaq site, or even Google the model number you just gave, look for the product specifications and see if it has an available expansion slot that matches the slot needed for the new card. If so then there shouldn't be any issue with adding it in.

You might be able to use the new card with the 250w PSU but to be safe you should add in the new PSU as well. The 8400gs is a pretty low end card so if you want something with better performance then you'll need to buy something new. However since you are running on-board now it will be a step up from that.

    Good luck

To add to that, what do you use the machine for? I'm assuming you don't game on it due to the onboard, so if thats the case the 8400gs will be just fine.

Yes It does than have a PCI express slot. Should I get a better card than the GeForce 8400 GS? I mostly use PC for watching video with occasional gaming. i have never upgraded Power Supply before but from what i've read it seems easy enough. Though I am not sure how to disable current video card since I have no video screen right now. Thanks

Are you certain the on-board graphics is even the issue? What exactly was the original problem I means aside from than nothing on the screen?

When you add in the new card it should disable the on-board anyways so that shouldn't matter. Before you buy anything else, and since you already have it. I'd add in the 8400gs and see if indeed its a graphics problem. Then if you want to buy something better you'll know.

Ah ok, well honestly I wouldn't buy the 8400gs then. What is the budget you are working with?
