Can't get driver to work (ATI Radeon 3200)
TLDR version: I installed Windows XP SP3 32 bit on an Acer Aspire 5517 laptop (previously running Vista) with an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card and cannot get a working driver for the card. I'm frustrated, please help.
The Long Story: a friend of mine dropped off his laptop for me to fix today (which for me is putting a new copy of windows xp on it), and I'm having tons of trouble getting its video card to work. Now, I'm by no means a guru, I can just solve some problems my computer illiterate friends cannot. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5517 that was running windows vista (not sure what service pack). According to my friends description the thing was "full of viruses" and wouldn't get online. Upon receiving it and attempting to turn it on the computer immediately went through the checking disk for errors the phase process, so I assumed my friend wasn't too far off. After salvaging some of his files I popped in my Windows XP sp3 disk and resorted the computer with the new operating system.
The computer was able to retrieve all but three drivers on its own, the sound card, "SM bus controller", and the video card. I was able to get the sound card driver from the acer website with no problems. I also downloaded the vga driver listed on the acer site (which was the ATI catalyst program). When I ran the catalyst program it gave me an error message reading "Application Install: install package not supported on this platform". I figured this had something to do with the fact that the computer was now running XP, as opposed to vista which the computer typically runs. After this I spent about 2 hours downloading, installing and running about 5 different versions of the catalyst program (they all looked exactly the same though so I'm not sure if they were even different programs or I just got a bunch of links to the same thing).
At this point I am very frustrated and have no idea what else to try. I would very much appreciate any help I can get.
