    More details are needed.

As you refer to the "Monitor' are we to assume you have a Desktop?

Go into power management options, change the option to put monitor to sleep; never.

I have the same issue sometimes. When I enter a 3D application, (3Dcad software, games, etc) it goes to sleep mode. The only way to wake it up is reboot. It doesn't always, it's a bit random.
I suspect it having something to do with the GPU, since the problem occurs whenever it switches to 3D mode.
What motherboard / graphics card / monitor do you have?
    Mine: mobo: ASrock K7S41GX
    GPU: visiontek ATI radeon2600pro
    Monitor: Dell 1440x900

Have you done any overclocking/modifying? Apart from that the only resemblance I can come up with is that I had 2GB of ram too, which can't posse-bely be related...
