Upgrading GPU In Gateway FX4710-03h
Hi!
I have the same dilemma. I am also looking to upgrade my old graphics card but unsure on how and what to change it to.
I currently have:
Gateway
System Model: FX4710-03h
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz (4CPUs)
Memory: 6142 MB RAM
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4850
I am wondering what other AMD model other than the 4850 I can change to, and which models I can change to. I am also wondering if its possible to change from what I have now (4850) to something in the ATI Radeon 5000 - 7000 Series.
The hard drive seems fine, I'm not sure if I have to change the whole motherboard if I have to make the changes. I just need a new graphics card cause the fan on the graphics card is making too much noise, and yes I often clean it.

Moved to new thread, please do not post in another members on-going thread it creates a ton of confusion and often leads to them not getting the help they need

Whats the Name Brand, Model and Wattage Rating of the Power Supply in your current system?
aside from that, technically any PCI Express Video card can be put into your PC, but depends on the PSU you have.
Also your C2Q is the lowest Speed model out there, and may be choking any new cards performance.
The Current Radeon 7750 is a bit faster than the Radeon 4850 was. the 7770 Is faster yet, and the 7800's are MUCH faster yet.
You can also put in a Geforce card as well, just because you had ATI/AMD before doesn't mean you can't have an Nvidia in there either.
What is your Budget for upgrades?i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

2nd Facepalm of the night...
NO, that is Not what the Power Supply is, you just reposted your Computers Model number.
Open up the case and Look for a Label on the Power Supply, see what it states for the Brand, Model, and Wattage rating.
If you have to open it to check, then do so, how else do you plan to get the new video card in there?
$350?
To be honest, if you have that much saved up, you'd be better off getting something newer and similar performing and saving the rest.
a Radeon 7750 would be a decent current card, its at least as good if not better than the 4850, and runs at a fraction of the power consumption, in fact it doesn't even need a Power connection from the power Supply.
Radeon 7770, would be feasible too, it does need a connection, but its Power consumption is only a bit more than the 7750, and still way lower than the old 4800's were.
About 55-60W for the 7750 (PCIe x16 slot provides up to 75W of power), 80-90W for the 7770, which is why it needs the power connector, the old 4850 used 110-115W, 4870 ran at 150W.
for $350, you can get a newer System with a newer Dual core, or even Low end Quad core, motherboard, 4GB DDR3 RAM.

$460.43 before shipping.
Then add in a GPU, and OS, and its a full system.
That Core i3 Dual core will run circles around your C2Q Q8200 as well.
If it were me, I'd just get a Radeon 7750:

and Antec VP450 450W above, and you'd be fine.
Then save the rest and save up enough for a newer System.
Anything really higher than a Radeon 6850 would be wasted on your current system, since the Quad core will choke the cards performance anyways.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

so do you currently have enough for a new system? Or are you just saying if you were to get one, thats what your target range would be?
aside from the current systems GPU fan troubles and what not, is it fast enough for you now, or are you looking for something much more capable?
If the latter, then a whole new system would be in the works IMO.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

I can get a new system, and if I were to get one that would be my price range.
My current computer is good enough for me, I just want to change the GPU fan and be able to play the current MMORPG games without having a graphics problem; the game runs well, just randomly has those graphic looking bugs during gameplay or when entering the game.
And the SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card ( 11202-00-20G) would that choke since its above HD 6850

um, how did you come to the conclusion the 7750 is above the 6850?
No, its not.
Just because its the successive generation card doesn't mean its better.
Following that Logic, then one could say using the prior 6000 series cards as an example, that a Radeon 6400 series $50 Card would be superior to the Prior Generations Dual GPU $750-1000 Radeon 5970.
its just not going to happen.
The 7750 and 7770 replace the 6750 and 6770.
The 6700's were just rebadged versions of the 5700's.
and the 5700's were replacements for the Radeon 4800's.
the 5700's used less power, and were just a hair under each of the 4800's. the 5750 was about the same or just a hair under the 4850 (of same memory size), and the 5770 was just under the 4870.
the 7750 itself is as powerful or a tad more than the prior 6770. So it would be at least as good if not better than a Radeon 4870.
The main reason the 5700/6700's were just a hair under the 4800's, is because AMD stupidly decided to pair them with a 128-bit memory bus rather than 256 like the 4800's were. But that had to do with the price range these cards were in. the 4800's were originally $200-400 range cards when they were around, the 5700/6700's were $100-150 range cards when they came out, so to AMD it didn't make sense to put a 256-bit bus card in that price range, especially since the Radeon 5800/6800 series was the true replacements for the 4800's.
and as if that weren't enough, the Radeon 6800's were more or less the replacements for the 5800's. And the newer 6900 series was the top dogs.
To add insult to injury, the current generation Radeon 7800's match the prior gen 6900's in performance, and the newer 7900's are even more powerful.
Basically with each successive generation, the whole performance line drops one classification of card down to the next lowest, at least with AMD Cards.
no, your CPU shouldn't choke that card at all.
if there was any bottleneck, it would be so little so as to not even be concerned with it.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

now the Radeon 7770 "GHz" editions, these cards can match the Radeon 6850 in some instances, but in others they are held back by their 128-bit memory bus, where the 6850's pull ahead. 256-bit or higher memory bus usually helps aid in better AntiAliasing and Shadow/lighting, and high res texture performance in games.
but the 7750 is no match for the 6850 period.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green
