2 monitors on 1 Mini DisplayPort
Edit: sorry for the repost. I meant Mini DisplayPort, not DisplayPort
Hey guys,
How could I go about connecting two monitors to a laptop with only one Mini DisplayPort? (no DVI/VGA/HDMI).
Are there relatively inexpensive monitors that can daisy-chain? Or would some sort of splitter work?Last edited by falarkys; August 12th, 2012 at 09:49 PM.

This thread on the Apple forums seems to cover your question.

Thanks for the link. I think the video chip (Intel HD 4000) should be able to support 3 displays, so that shouldn't be an issue.
I was wondering if a splitter would be sufficient to use two monitors though (or if both monitors would just display the same thing).
Are there any mini displayport monitors that support daisy chaining?

As far as I know, they would display the same thing.

Hi There,
If there is only one display port, then both Monitors are going to display the same image. The computer will detect both monitors as 1 Input because you are using a splitter (1 vga cable converting into 2). The only way to have two monitors and extending your desktop on the second screen is to use your laptop screen as primary or secondary and use 1 monitor as the extension.
If you want two monitors to show two seperate images (extending windows desktop) Then the Video Card of the Laptop or System will need to have atleast two outputs. Ie One Vga and One DVI/HDMI

Thanks!
Would it be possible to use a USB to DVI adapter to attach a second monitor? Or does there being only 1 mini displayport suggest that the video card is only capable of handling 1 additional display?

Multiple Monitors From One DP Output
Guys, I design chips that go into DisplayPort products. The product I sent out contains one of my chips. It will allow you to connect up to 3 monitors from a single DP output from the laptop. It makes the laptop think that there is a really wide screen monitor connected to it. 2X 1080p monitors are no problem from this dongle.

Why do you need to use only the DP connector? Aren't there any other type ports?

Unfortunately, there's only a mini DP and two USBs.
