    XFX 9800GT Code 10 Error

    Hello,

I have a gaming computer that I built about 4 years ago. I would use it every day, but recently I stopped using my computer. Just now, after not using it for a while, I turned it on to see that it did not recognize my graphics card (it defaulted to on-board graphics). So, I re-installed the graphics card drivers. It still didn't work. I put in a different graphics card, installed its drivers, and it worked fine. I even tried installing the 9800gt driver directly from the CD. It gave me the error: "This device cannot start (code 10)."

Does this mean the card is dead? Should I try "baking" it?

    Thanks

which actual Driver versions were you using? Which OS are you running (WinXP, Vista, 7, 32 or 64-bit).

you said it works with a different Graphics card, but what was the card that worked?

The first time, I downloaded the latest driver for my 9800GT via their website, and installed it. That did not work at all
Then I tried installing via the CD, which at least recognized the card.. but it gave me the Code 10 error.

I am running WinXP 32 bit

the card that worked was a lower-end nvidia card (91.36_forceware_quadro)

The 9800GT you have, is this an original version 9800GT (Requires a 6 pin PCIe Power cable from the PSU) or one of the revised lower spec models with out a power cable to it?

Wondering if maybe the Power cable was loose or not secure and maybe could of been causing problems with it not being detected?

as to baking it, I wouldn't really bother unless you really know what your doing. the 9800GT sadly is out classed by cards costing $50 these days easily.

you'd be better off just buying a new replacement card instead, if the 9800GT is dead or defective. (Since Baking is not really a fix, but a temporary fix/patch)

It is one that requires a power cable to it, for the fan. The power cable is securely fastened to it, and the fan runs fine

ah, ok. what about calling the manufacturer, would they replace/upgrade it for free? or has it been too long?

Um, that power cable is NOT for the fan, its for the card. The PCI Express slot provides up to 75W of power through the slot for cards, which includes the power to run the fan, the 6 Pin connector is additional power the card needs beyond that 75W max limit through the slot.

depends on whether you had a Lifetime Warranty card or one with a 2 or 3 year warranty. know way to tell for sure with out the actual Product ID code or similar which should be on a sticker on the card.

But I haven't used XFX cards since the 7800GT days, so no idea if they do anything like that. EVGA Does, I know for sure, but not sure on XFX.

You'd probably have to look at the card and find its Model number sticker or product code or whatever, then use that to look up the card, either via Google or through XFX, and then contact them if its still under warranty.

Chances are if it is under warranty, it will be replaced with something newer, since the 9800GT hasn't been made in years.

also, just so you know, XFX doesn't make any Nvidia Cards anymore, with the exception of a couple low end products, they lost their license from Nvidia a couple years ago to produce cards with Nvidia Chips, at least for higher end cards, and are solely or mainly Radeon Card maker now.

so they might offer you a Radeon equivalent if its still under warranty, unless they offer to take it in and fix it or something.

Thats the exact model? XFX PVT98GYDLU (it lacks the 6 Pin PCI Express Power Connector from the Power Supply, you mentioned yours has one)

See attached pics below for what a 9800GT with 6 Pin Power Connector looks like.

If That is the card you have on Newegg, its a Lifetime Warranty Card, which should still be under warranty, so I would consider trying to contact XFX and see what they can do in replacing it, if its dead, defective, or whatever else.

I wouldn't be surprised if the card is defective or dead, some of those small single slot coolers weren't all that effective in keeping the cards running cool, the dual slot cooler models were usually more likely to last longer.

That's the exact model, taken from my newegg history. But, It does have a 6 pin power connector. It looks like the one in the pictures you attached.

That's odd... maybe my newegg history linked to a newer version of the card? :/

I will contact XFX and see how it goes. Thanks for the help

well, its not uncommon for newegg to screw up on their images of products from time to time, so very well could be they have the wrong pics shown, if yours is like the one I have, then yeah, thats the 6 pin powered models.

Tigerdirect shows the right version it seems:

XFX PVT98GYDLU GeForce 9800 GT Video Card - FREE Call of Duty 4 PC Game, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, (2) Dual Link DVI, HDTV, VGA Support at TigerDirect.com

so does directron.com: XFX PVT98GYDLU Video Card XFX PV-T98G-YDLU GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 Video Card-Best Computer Online Store - Buy with Discount Prices from Houston Texas-Directron.com

yeah, I'd suggest contacting XFX, and see if it can be replaced... hopefully with a similar "Price range" Radeon in their current lineup of cards, otherwise, they might try to replace it with a similar performance range card, which sadly even the lower end Radeon 6570 beats the 9800GT to a pulp.

Similar price range to the 9800GT from all those years ago, would be a more recent Radeon HD 7750/7770 range card, or even the Radeon HD 6850/6790 series.

just out of curiosity, whats the power supply you have in there right now?

ah, cool, older unit, but still viable.

    I have a couple of the "newer" Neo Eco Series from Antec, 400W with a 30A +12V Rail, and a 520W With a 40A 12V Rail, your 500W has a 34A Combined 12V Rail.

Was able to run a 182W GTX 260, Socket 775 (Core 2 Based) Celeron Dual Core, 2GB DDR2, 500GB HDD and DVD Drive off of the 400W Antec, so you shouldn't have any power draw issues there, even if its a bit older unit.

meh, if your fine with running in 32-bit, then XP is fine still. Though more and more games are requiring DirectX 10 and 11, so those will be exclusively Windows Vista or 7, or soon down the road, 8.

whats the rest of your system specs looking like? (CPU, Motherboard, RAM?)
