Please help with new graphics card choice

Can someone advise me on a new Graphics card and PSU?

    I have spotted a
Palit 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 610 Graphics Card and a Powercool 750W 80+ Dual 12V V2.2 High Efficiency PSU.

    I currently have 2gb of DDR2 Ram and a Q6600 Quad core @2.4Ghz. I also have 2 500GB HDD and a DVD RW drive. My motherboard is a G31T-M (V1.0)

    Thanks

    Hello and welcome to TechIMO!

Sure, but you will first need to tell us what you plan to do with that graphics card? Is this for video playback, hd movies, general use, etc. Or is this going to be for gaming?

Also a 750w psu is overkill for those specs, and on top of that, powercool is not a reliable brand for them.

What is your budget and what country are you based out of?
    Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit
    File Server: AMD Opteron 180 / 3gb DDR400 / Nvidia 6200 / WinXP Home 32bit / Lubuntu 12.10
    Laptop: HP-Compaq nc8430/ Intel CoreDuo T2400 / 2gb DDR2 667/ Ati x1600 / WinXP Pro 32bit

    Hi,

It`s for gaming and I am based out of the UK. What would you recommend for a PSU?

    My budget is around £100

Forget the video card, its too weak for most gaming.

you should be looking at nothing less than a Radeon 6570/6670 or Nvidia GT 430/440 or GT 620/630 at the very least (just make sure it has 128-bit Memory bus or higher).

as to the PSU, you don't need anything remotely close to 700W.

a decent 350-400W quality brand unit would run your system with those cards listed above.

What games are you playing? What Video Resolution are you playing at?

I play Skyrim and My res is usually 1280x1024. I want to be looking at something that will handle BF3 on mid range graphics at least.

BF3 on mid range at least, is not going to be possible in your Budget range, not with out spending the entire budget on the GPU alone.

Depending on the PSU you currently have, you might be able to do this, but you might have to bump up the budget a bit more to accomodate for the need for a new PSU.

Otherwise, for the PSU and GPU for 100 GBP, and what you want for graphics, its not going to happen sad to say.

yeah, for 100 GBP (have to keep using that reference, since I don't have a GB pound sign on my keyboard)

It may be possible to step into something like a Radeon HD 7770 or Geforce GTX 550 Ti, which neither are really even Mid range cards, but would be your best bet at getting the performance you want, might even be able to find a used GTX 560 or Radeon HD 6870 on some forums that would be fine, and certainly be able to run BF3 on Moderate settings in offline and some smaller maps.

but then there's the whole PSU issue, whether you need a new one or not.

Just an example, one of the other forums some of us here are on:

    FS / EVGA GTX470 1280MB

That guy selling his GTX 470, which would be more than capable of running BF3 at moderate settings, is from the UK. Thing is, the GTX 470 I know is a loud card, and runs very hot. Not to mention the card itself consumes a good 200-220W of power by itself.

yeah, the PSU will need to be upgraded, those Enlights aren't exactly heavy hitter PSU's.

so for 100GBP budget, one of those Radeon 6670 range cards and a newer 350-400W Quality brand PSU will be needed.

The Enlight might be able to run the 6670, but from my experience with their units in past years, you start loading up near the PSU's max efficiency and they can start to overload, and cause random reboots and shut downs.

Corsair 430W would be enough as well. 6670 doesn't use THAT much power, though if you upgraded your GPU again in a year, the 500W would be already in there and no need to replace that again either.

If your going for the 6670, if you can find one with GDDR5 memory, that would be the better one to get, if not, then the GDDR3 version would be fine as well.

Start your own thread instead of highjacking someone else's unrelated thread.

And start by posting your complete system hardware specs.
