| loss of color: red is black
For about a month now, my screen will seemingly blink and seem more blue or something. This causes losses of certain colors, which I'm pretty sure are ones with red in them (mostly cuz I tried to change the amount of red in display properties and there is no change no matter where I put it).
Anyway, now it's always like this. Reds are now just shades of blacks. And anything with reds in them just seems faded or something. I'm wondering what the heck is going on.
I have a cheapo built-in graphics card (it's an older, crappy IBM desktop). It's ATI Rage Pro Turbo, I believe. The monitor is new to me, probably a couple years old, but I don't know if that's the problem.
I'm having difficulty explaining what happened, but hopefully somebody understands me. Any ideas?
TIA

DEFINITELY a bad monitor, signal cord, or HD15 connector/pins.
Could also be loose. You can recreate this on another machine by just unplgging the monitor from the PC A LITTLE. This will drop signals for either R/G/B from the monitor.
I SERIOUSLY doubt the video has gone bad on the mobo. It's either all or nothing from that...

Good news! A new monitor has never been cheaper. I brought an almost new 17" NEC home from work (all LCDs at work so they were giving them away). This thing was not used more than a month. I had it working for two days and the red gun just went. It happens. The bad part was having to haul it back to work to get rid of it. |

Ok, well I just check the cord and it seems to be OK. I don't know if that's it, though, cuz a couple hours ago the colors were back to normal for about 15 minutes or so, and nothing got touched or anything to make it do that. It just did, so I don't know what's up.
Out, no I don't think it is. I'll have to ask later when it's awake (it was up late partying, ya know).
I wish I could get a new one. Wish I could get a whole new computer actually (this has a AMD 266 MHz and 48 MB RAM in it), but yeah having no money sorta prevents that. It's a good thing for free internet.
Thanks for the help. I was sorta afraid it was going bad, especially since I just got it a couple months ago. But whatever, $#!t happens.
Later. |

My monitor did this on and off for a while. I'd whack it on the side with my shoe and it'd be fine. Went on like this for a month until my wife got tired of hearing the occasional loud THWACK!, usually accompanied by me cursing, and bought me a new monitor. |

I beleive it's called percussive maintenance. LOL! J-E
Cujo, lousy connection somewhere.
Could be at the monitor, at the vid card, or the cable.
Dry joints are not uncommon on plug/sockets mounted directly on soldered boards, and thats where i'd be looking.
If you are not familiar with soldering or inspecting boards for lousy joints, post back, we'll offer more advice.
Cheers Rusty. |

CujoRbd, with some 17" monitors running $50, I can't believe you're too poor for that. |

Try running the video card at default 16 color mode and also a different video card if available. It could also be a faulty driver or video card.
